New York: Jeremy Laing layers fur, leather, prints and knits for a lineup of new fall favourites

feb10laingfw10_lg

Canadian darling Jeremy Laing presented his fall collection on Friday at Milk Studios to a fashion pack that included uptown girls, rockers, downtown indie girls, men in heels and everything in between. Models stood against a white backdrop wearing Laing’s latest wares, a cognac leather vest, swirly print wrap dress, softly structured sheared beaver hooded jacket (my fave!), cropped wool and leather jacket with military-inspired arm embellishment and a full length sleeveless cutaway coat. Laing’s lineup was a well edited collection of new fall favourites.

Oh, and like the polite Canadian that he is, Laing had a table of chocolate chip ginger cookies on hand for those in need of a post presentation nibble. We spied a well-known NYC-based makeup artist stuffing multiples in his pockets: “I have house guests!”

The Bay makes a Blanket Statement with ten Canadian designers

Comrags' take on the Bay's point blanket coat

Back in October, we told you about the Bay’s new line of Canadiana–The Hudson’s Bay Company Collection–the brings canoes, paddles and point blankets together with collaborations with Canadian fashion names such as Pink Tartan, Harricana and Virginia Johnson. The line launched Tuesday night at a packed cocktail party where guests noshed on de rigueur nouveau comfort food–grilled cheese sandwiches with homemade ketchup, potatoes with bison tartare and maple syrup poured over freezer-made snow. The big attraction of the evening was the official unveiling of ten one-of-a-kind coats–together dubbed The Blanket Statement–that the Bay commissioned from a group of Canadian designers who played with the iconic point blanket. Calla Haynes: The mistress of digital-impressionist prints goes solo

nov09calla2_lg

Toronto-born designer Calla Haynes played debutante at the most recent Paris Fashion Week: After working for Olivier Theyskens (at Rochas and Nina Ricci) and designing textiles for Jeremy Laing and Erin Featherston, the mistress of digital-impressionist prints has gone solo. Her water-coloured spring collection is fresh and elegant, mixing corsetry with airier shapes. And there’s a standout jacket, all patchworked pastel snakeskin, that we hope we’ll see then the collection hits the Bay’s The Room.

Party pics: Bloor Street comes out for CANFAR

On Wednesday night, Bloor Street threw it’s massive annual fundraising effort for the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research (CANFAR). To reach their $400,000 goal, Bloor Street Entertains turns boutiques all over Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood in pop-up restos catered by the city’s top chefs. Marc Thuet, Jamie Kennedy and Blu’s Massimo Collavani were just a few of the foodie names who cooked menus at venues normally known for dishing out luxe–Tiffany & Co., Eleven, George C., Holt Renfrew, Teatro Verde and Cartier among them. After dinner, the party moved over to the Royal Ontario Museum where the guest list included designers Sunny Fong, Jeremy Laing, Philip Sparks and Nada Shepherd, Canadian fashion royals Joe Mimran and Kimberley Newport-Mimran (who were also the event’s co-chairs), and sea of smartly dressed socials who cut a rug and tried to outbid each other in the silent auction.

Bay watch: The Canadian icon reimagined

nov09theBay3_lg

We went over to the Bay Queen Street earlier today to check out the newly revamped The Room. Actually, revamped is too soft a term for the metamorphosis of the Bay flagship’s home for runway wear–it’s truly a sight to behold. We’ll have pictures tomorrow, but in the meantime, we wanted to show you another of the company’s cool projects: the Hudson’s Bay Company collection. The new line has everything from canoes to tees and includes collaborations with some Canadian designers–striped cardies from by Pink Tartan, recycled fur handbags by Harricana’s Mariouche Gagné and one-of-a-kind, not-for-sale coats from the likes of Jeremy Laing, Erdem (see it on our cover!), Smythe and Todd Lynn.

CanCon in Paris

Canadien(ne)s are taking over Paris–well, a tiny, unobtrusive corner of it. Nestled into the infamous Le Regine last night were designers Jeremy Laing and Rad Hourani, top blogger Tommy Ton, Shinan Govani with a bit of an entourage, and more… “I’ve never seen so many of us in one room here!” exclaimed one lively expatriate.

New designer-to-know Calla Haynes had cause to celebrate, in her gentle way: This week marks the coming-out of her eponymous solo line. (Previously, she earned her pedigree under Olivier Theyskens at Nina Ricci and creating prints for Laing.) Read the rest of this entry »

Highly Curated

JEREMY LANG Fall 2009 looks to be worn at the Venice Biennale

JEREMY LANG Fall 2009 looks to be worn at the Venice Biennale.

Canadian design wunderkind Jeremy Laing (jeremylaing.com), is taking a dip in art waters. Looks from his Fall 2009 collection will be worn by staff and curators at the Venice Biennale’s Canadian Pavilion. Opening June 7, the Pavilion will host the work of artist Mark Lewis who will be representing Canada with four films in the contemporary visual art exhibition. Said Laing of the honour: “I think the sober northern aesthetic of my work will be a nice complement to the cold, quiet austerity of his project for the Biennale.” Sober thoughts aside, Laing’s clothes will dazzle even the most jaded collector’s eye.

Girls on film: Canadian model Coco Rocha, in head-to-toe Greta Constantine (fall, of course), sent flash bulbs into a frenzy on King Street on Thursday night when she arrived at the Women X Women party, held at the future home of the Fashion House condos. (One photographer even joked with the new redhead that she was looking better than Ms. Jolie.) Read the rest of this entry »

On Monday night, Holt Renfrew hosted their media/VIP cocktail party, always the kickoff to Toronto Fashion Week. The gotta-get-an-invite party has long been held in the first floor handbag section, but this season, they moved the festivities up to the new third-floor contemporary space. The other change was a mini runway presentation featuring five Canadian labels: Mikhael Kale, Philip Sparks, Greta Constantine, Jeremy Laing and Denis Gagnon. Check out all of our party snaps!
