The chronicles of John Galliano and the quickest pardon in fashion history

Comments

As is the case with virtually any news story these days, the developments in the John Galliano story⎯the designer being accused of hurling anti-Semitic insults at an (incidentally non-Jewish) couple while drinking at the Paris café, Le Perle⎯can be measured in tweets, quotes and snippets. Given the proliferated speed at which these bits are published and publicized, it’s amazing to witness how quickly the industry’s reaction has gone from appalled to forgiving to looking forward to the designer’s imminent replacement at Dior. Given the industry’s propensity for forgetfulness⎯history has made fools of those who once condemned Coco Chanel for her involvement with the Nazis or Kate Moss for being caught with cocaine⎯we have no doubt that Galliano will be back at the top in no time. All references to the frankly horrifying severity of his remarks will vanish and whereas Chanel’s and Moss’s actions took years to do the same, Galliano’s have almost done so in a matter of 14 days. Meanwhile, as rumours swirl for a possible replacement by Riccardo Tisci, Alber Elbaz and Marc Jacobs, we take a look back at the quickest judgment turnarounds in fashion history.

British designer Roland Mouret doesn’t see a diffusion line in his future: “I would never do a diffusion line. I don’t think the future is that. People mix brands all the time already, so you need to do something else. We are living in a different fashion world now,” he said. [Style File] Read more »

The spotter’s guide to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Comments

Let’s be clear about one thing: The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is not really about fashion. But we knew that, and anyway, it doesn’t really matter. Not to the hordes of young women that appear out of nowhere, pink shopping bags in hand, within a 500-metre radius of any of the lingerie titan’s locations. (There are eleven stores in Canada–four Victoria’s Secret and seven for their younger Pink line.) Not to the crowd that piled into the Armory on Lexington Avenue on November 10 to see the show–a group that included Gerard Butler, Adrien Grenier, Russell Simmons, Malin Akerman and Paris Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. Not to every person who we’ve spoken to in the two weeks since who want to know how the Angels look up close (gorgeous, obviously), how much they have to exercise (Adriana Lima trains six days a week leading up to the show) and whether the wings are heavy (Candice Swanepoel‘s trainer give her extra shoulder exercises to prepare). Fashion news: Christina Hendricks for London Fog, Lady Gaga’s drag cover, and Crystal Renn dances around looking slender

Comments

Cue the chorus: In the video above, shot during a photoshoot for Canadian mag The Block, Crystal Renn dances around in a nude leotard, looking pretty darn slim. [Dossier Journal, via Racked]

Lady Gaga‘s alter ego, a Sicilian mechanic named Jo Calderone will grace the cover of Japanese Vogue Hommes. An excerpt from the interview with “Jo” implies the two slept together: “WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO LADY GAGA?  I met her at a shoot Nick Knight was doing. She’s fuckin beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, “Don’t be baby, you were “born this way.” I took her out after. The rest is private ;)”.  [The Cut] Read more »

Fashion news: Aggy on film, Naomi Campbell (reportedly) strikes again and Jersey Shore in Harper’s Bazaar

A 13-minute film noir starring Agyness Deyn has just been released. Titled Mean To Me, the short flick is set in the 1930s with vintage-style gowns courtesy of Zac Posen. [StyleList]

Although Naomi Campbell reportedly struck again (sorry for the pun), no legal action will be taken. The supermodel was questioned by the NYPD after allegedly slapping and punching her driver, and slapped with a harrasment report, which doesn’t have any penalties or subsequent charges. Jessica Stam is designing a capsule collection for Macy’s. While it’s hard to get excited about yet another collaboration, the fact that Stam is one of our favourite models does have us looking forward to the results. [StyleFrizz]

Lily Allen is taking her career path in a different direction and moving into to fashion. Her sister and the former singer are starting a vintage clothing project called “Lucy in Disguise,” which will launch at the Vintage at Goodwood festival in the UK in August. [The Cut] Read more »

Terry Richardson snaps Jessica Stam with a tiger and a giant shoe box for Aldo’s spring/summer campaign

We have a little pre-Valentine’s day, Friday afternoon treat for you: Shots from Aldo’s spring/summer campaign, shot by Terry Richardson and starring Jessica Stam. While the campaign is ostensibly about Aldo’s shoes and accessories (check the cute bow bracelet on the first slide), photo–a big red heart, a giant ice-cream cone, a hot lips phone and a ceramic tiger. Campaign-mate Boyd Holbrook is holding his own little piece of pop culture–a disco ball that references Richardson’s cover of Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Sounds. (Meta!)
