Valentine's Day Gifts

Ah, Valentine’s Day! If you’ve been a twosome for years or are just celebrating your first February 14 together, the question of what to give is always a tricky one to tackle. We’re here to take the guesswork out of Valentine’s Day gifts, with a complete guide of stylish ideas for the man, woman and best friend in your life. From sultry suggestions for lingerie and loungewear—including a bustier that can totally double as a crop top—to jewellery in a range of prices and styles, we have Valentine’s Day gifts for all sorts of lovers. For instance, not ready to propose but want to still put a ring on it? Consider a rose gold commitment ring engraved with a playful (and we mean playful!) phrase. Instead of sending a dozen red roses go with a vibrant bouquet of purple, burgundy and lavender flowers. Men may be notoriously hard to buy for, but we guarantee that every guy will be impressed by a Valentine’s Day gift of high-end grooming products, a dapper bow tie or a quirky pair of cufflinks. For the best friend on your list, cute and stylish Valentine’s Day gifts are the best way to show you care. We’re fond of quaint jewellery boxes, sweet-smelling soaps and body washes—including one scented like conversation hearts! No matter what Valentine’s Day gifts you give, we think that delivery with a flirty smile is always key.

The list: Fiery accents set classic black-and-white houndstooth ablaze

See our editor’s houndstooth picks »

Black and white houndstooth is by no means a new trend in fashion—it gained mainstream popularity in the 1930s and has been modified many times over. For Fall 2012 designers have once again put their spin on the classic look and there are many houndstooth pieces that can be kicked up by simply adding red and gold accents.

Maisonette 1977’s form-fitting dress is not full-on houndstooth, but rather gives a hint of the pattern on the top and bottom in case you’re too nervous to go for the whole nine yards. However, for full-on houndstooth try the popular pattern on pants (like this pair by Melanie Lyne) or on a Jacob skirt. If you’re wearing houndstooth on the bottom, be sure to not do the same on top—break it up with a bold colour, like a red blouse from Equipment.

You can also add pops of colour with the accessories you choose to accent with. Red and black heels by Aquazzura will keep you completely on trend, or go small with jewellery. A red and gold ring by Kate Spade or some gold bracelets from Pandora will add just the right amount of colour, turning a classic outfit into something fiery and fresh.

Meredith Marks knows how to shine. A former model, the Chicago-based accessories designer (and mother of three) launched her eponymous jewellery line in 2010. Since then, her modern-meets-vintage sparklers (hello, white-diamond and rose-gold teardrop earrings) have been spotted on A-listers such as Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox. Now, they’re swinging this side of the border. From May 4 to 13, Holt Renfrew is hosting an exclusive Meredith Marks (meredithmarks.com) trunk show at its flagship location (50 Bloor St. W., 416-922-2333, holtrenfrew.com). Read more »

Game on: 4 steps on how to wear sport utility

The race is on to find this season’s most sleek, athletic-inspired pieces. “Sport was touched on in almost every collection,” says Nicholas Mellamphy, creative director of The Room at the Bay. He points to Anthony Vaccarello’s use of tech fabrics and utility details, Antonio Berardi’s strong colour and stripe detailing, Yves Saint Laurent’s “sporty but elegant” eveningwear jumpsuits and J. Mendel’s play on the old-school sports jersey. The question is: Can sporty wear be made office-appropriate? Mellamphy laces up to give us a pep talk.
