Toronto Fashion Week: Crystal Renn and Kirsten Owen lead the charge at Joe Fresh

JOE FRESH STYLE Fall 2010. Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

The Joe Fresh Style show is always a crowd pleaser. Flying in top models (Crystal Renn and Kirsten Owen), debuting the new single from Shawn Desman and filling the front row with local celebs and socialites gave the show must-see buzz. While the last few seasons at Joe have shown crystal clear messages on the runway, last night’s presentation was more of a mash-up of fall’s hottest trends. With fun fur, military, sweatpants, and schoolboy, the show had much more of as street-style focus. Piece by piece, there were lots of lust-haves. Tricked-out biker boots, chain-strap bags, puffy jackets and all of the faux fur bits are sure to be big hits once they hit Loblaw and Real Canadian Superstores in a few months, but the show missed the cult caché of the past few seasons.

The daily steal: Brogues, $59

Where heels are neither reasonable nor desirable, brogues have been appearing as the practical shoe of choice (in place of the once ubiquitous ballet flat). This creamy Joe Fresh Style pair ($59, joe.ca) is perfect for strolling sunny spring streets sans-socks.

The daily steal: Bomber jacket, $49

Canadian weather puts a larger-than-average strain on one’s outwear resources. We must have several lengths, weights and fabrics at the ready in case it is either warm, frigid or rainy–or all three–that particular day. This grey faux-leather bomber from Joe Fresh Style ($49, joe.ca) isn’t going to change any of that, but it just so happens to be perfect for the conditions outside my door this very second.

Q&A: Theodora Richards splurges on unicorn-hair shorts

Theodora Richards makes a good save after losing her shoe at the Joe Fresh Style Spring 2010 show. Photography by Angela Y. Martin

Theodora Richards—the 25-year-old model progeny of Patti Hansen and Keith Richards—is, you imagine, a high-rolling rock heiress. Mustn’t her trust fund be just heaped with Rolling Stones royalties? And modelling still pays, right? In the past few years, she’s fronted for Burberry, Erin Kleinberg and—alongside big sis Alexandra—French Connection. This spring, she joins fellow rock princesses Daisy Lowe and Pixie Geldof in the high court of C’N’C Costume National models. But then you meet her, fresh off the cheap-and-cheerful Joe Fresh Style runway (where she lost a shoe but bravely kept walking) at LG Fashion Week in Toronto [See the full Joe Fresh Style Spring 2010 show], and she’s all breathlessly chatty, literally in her stockinged feet and talkin’ ’bout her budget woes. Do you feel sympathy for the spawn? Read on.

The daily steal: Liquid eyeliner, $6

Comments

If someone had told me a few weeks ago that I’d find my latest eye make up obsession at the Real Canadian Super Store, I would have stuck my nose up at them and then back into my Sephora catalogue. But it’s true: the Fine Liquid Eyeliner by Joe Fresh Beauty (joe.ca) handles like a dream and will surely become your best friend and go-to product for creating whatever look you desire, from Catwoman to Kat Von D. It dries quickly, is amazingly long-lasting, and (drumroll, please!) can be yours for a mere $6.

Toronto’s LG Fashion Week has found a new home. After living in tents at Nathan Phillips Square (a few short blocks from our office), then last season at King and Shaw, the show is moving to an indoor spot with 40-foot ceilings in nearby Liberty Village. FDCC prez Robin Kay told The Toronto Star that the runway will be inside the building, which will also have a tent erected outside.

The FDCC has also released a roughed in schedule with a start date of Sunday, March 28. (The shows close Thursday, April 1.) Read more »
