It’s not very often that an evening can be described as unforgettable, but Operanation 8: A Muse Ball was exactly that. Last Friday, the Canadian Opera Company’s annual gala took over the three-storied lobby of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, a glittering venue that had passersby on University Avenue gawking through the windows, and with good reason.
Yorkville’s Rac Boutique put together a fashion installation of custom-made designs by Canadian labels like Calla, Joeffer Caoc, Ashley Rowe, and Greta Constantine. Since the wares were showcased by models more mannequin than mortal, more than one of the 1,100 guests was excused for mistakenly fondling the ladies’ outfits. But really, who could resist copping a feel of that floor-length, electric-purple Arthur Mendonça number?

Joeffer Caoc showed us how to stay glam on and off the court in his Spring 2012 collection. Despite the early afternoon start time, the fashion week veteran drew in high profile attendees including Jeanne Beker and our very own Bernadette Morra. Models marched down the runway like they were about to play a championship game—a champion in a much more chic uniform. Sportif looks included loose tanks and shorts with flashes of fuchsia, orange, and blue layered under breezy jackets and tunics, singlet-inspired column dresses, and gold lamé harem pants covered in black mesh. Aside from the occasional colour-blocked tote on the models’ arms, Caoc held back on accessories. (Who wants to lose an earring during a game?) Next time Caoc is hosting a game of pickup basketball, we hope we make the cut.

The Spring 2012 collections, taking place October 17–21, will mark the 25th Toronto fashion week. Having previously announced the location of the new venue, the Fashion Design Council of Canada has now released the schedule and details about the week.
While we’re not sure what to expect with the week’s theme of “CanadaCool,” we’re excited about the new venue, David Pecaut Square. With the new venue being downtown, we no longer have to teeter down to the exhibition in four-inch heels.
Each season showcases Canada’s design talent and Spring 2012 is no different, with collections from fashion heavyweights Joeffer Caoc, Pink Tartan, Denis Gagnon, and the new and exciting Amanda Lew Kee and Chloe Comme Parris. This season is also going international with established American designer Cynthia Rowley showing three never-before-seen looks.
With a new name and venue, we hope that the collections from Canadian designers are equally as fresh and thrilling.

A buzzing crowd filed into a cavernous concrete space at the Brickworks last night for the Art of Progression presentation, featuring the Spring 2011 collections from Joeffer Caoc, DimitriChris and Nada. The chilly evening air wafted in through the rafters–through which the moon made a pretty appearance–leaving many a mini-skirted patron complaining of fingers almost too numb to Tweet the proceedings (almost).
First up, after a sponsor-placed Audi drove the length of the runway, daringly close to front-rowers’ toes, Joeffer Caoc sent out a wide variety of looks, ranging from slinky striped jersey dresses to Barbie-pink satin tops to shipshape relaxed navy suiting shown with spangled silver tanks.
Next, menswear designer DimitriChris pushed the envelope of businesswear, showing a shrunken tailored capelet and a candy-striped suit that seemed more fit for the breakfast table than the boardroom.
Finally, Nada designer Nada Shepherd, who recently opened her first store uptown at Bayview Village, took things in a sophisticated direction with crisp crosshatch-print linen separates, trim belted jackets with sharp origami-esque pleats at the front, and a finale parade of four royal blue jersey columns.
