The top 10 strangest celebrity creative directors

Gone are the days when celebrities and designers were just, well, celebrities and designers. Now with every celebrity endorsement comes with a prestigious title—one that we’re used to being associated with helming a major fashion house—the creative director.

While we can’t be too certain what part of the process these celebrity endorsements play other than lending their face or fame to the product, it has become increasingly common for musicians, actors, and designers to add a creative director title to their CVs (aka their Wikipedia pages). With the recent news of Alicia Keys becoming the Global Creative Director of Blackberry, and today’s announcement of Marc Jacobs as the newest creative director of Diet Coke—succeeding Jean Paul Gaultier—we’ve decided to take a look back at some of the weirdest and flat out funniest creative directors to date.

2013 is finally upon us, and as many people are probably struggling to remember what they did for New Year’s Eve, the proof—for better or worse—is ready for a peek on social media. New Year’s Eve is often the best time to take a fashion risk, and many celebrities did just that. At the annual Dick Clark New Years Rockin’ Eve blowout celebration in New York’s Times Square, Taylor Swift updated the classic motorcycle jacket with the addition of red sequins as she performed a slew of her hits and planted a kiss on beau Harry Stiles of One Direction at the stroke of midnight. Yeah, we’re not above the swoon. Carly Rae Jepsen wore red as well, fashioned in a long and frilly ball skirt by Sachin + Babi (under which she adorably wore long johns) paired with black lace gloves, Madonna-style.

Worst Dressed 2012

With 2013 so close we can nearly taste it, we’re taking some time to look back and reflect on 2012 and learn a little. Our year has been filled with designer switch-ups, Kate Middleton sightings and a whole lot of celebrity spotting. We’ve always been told we’re supposed to learn from our mistakes, but instead we’re ignoring our own and looking to the worst dressed of 2012—from celebrities on the red carpet to their day-to-day lives—for some fashion lessons.

These are (some) of our picks for the worst dressed of 2012, those who offer a learning experience from their fashion flops. While every look may not be a fashion disaster, we’ve learned it’s all about the timing and nature of the event that can take a look from stylish to just plain wrong (à la Kanye West at the 12-12-12 benefit). From Justin Bieber’s decision to wear overalls to a formal event to Angelina Jolie’s right leg showing us how not to pose, we’ve learned a lot over the year and plan to avoid these mistakes at all costs (even if we’ll never be walking a red carpet). If a tree falls and no one hears it, did it happen? And by tree falling, we mean dressing up for Halloween. The lurking on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are a highlight that comes each year on November 1st (at least for us, that is), and celebrities are not left out of this equation. From Kim Kardashian dressed as a blonde curvy mermaid to Anna Dello Russo winning Halloween as an haute couture wearing Pope, celebrity costumes are an extra treat to look at after eating all the treats. Other delightful costumed appearances came from the Brant brothers, Kate Moss, Miley Cyrus (or is that Nikki Minaj), Gwen Stefani, and so many more. So take a look and try to relive the spookiest night of the year with these stars.

Couldn’t get to the exhibit? Chanel’s Little Black Jacket launches as a website

We have all heard of the Little Black Dress, the origins of which can be traced back to designs of Coco Chanel’s from the 1920s. But what do we know of the Little Black Jacket? Luckily for us, Chanel has a website devoted to this iconic piece of clothing.

Karl Lagerfeld has been celebrating this classic piece of fashion history in his new book, The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’S classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, and with a new exhibition on display in London a couple of weeks ago that will make its way to Tokyo, Paris and New York among other cities.

But if you don’t live in any of the cities that the exhibition is traveling to, don’t fret as Chanel’s website has it available to view online. The result is a who’s-who’s of the fashion and celebrity crowd showcased in over 100 photographs of them putting their own spin on the jacket. The innovative online exihibtion takes Alice Dellal to Vanessa Paradis among others on a unique animated spin across your computer screen.

Kanye West x Karl Lagerfeld? A rumoured collaboration might be in the works

Could there be a Kaiser and Kanye collaboration or business deal on the way? Karl Lagerfeld and Kanye West were spotted on a lunch date at the Mercer Hotel in Manhattan last Thursday by a New York Post-employed spy and supposedly, it was all business.

The New York Post reported that, “They were in a deep conversation, then later appeared to be getting devices out to discuss design ideas.” We’d like to think that Karl was showing off cute pictures of Choupette (and Kanye sharing ones of Mercy in return), rather than discussing fashion with the rapper, but hey.

TGIF, folks! We’ve spent our week finding simple and super awesome (if we do say so ourselves) costume ideas from Marc Jacobs to Kristen Stewart every day all week, and on Fridays, we wear pink (we know the line is technically Wednesday, but work with us here). And more pink than your eyes can probably handle, because today’s edition of Halloween costumes is all about dressing like the most stylish child in Hollywood, Miss Suri Cruise.

There’s a fine line that those who attempt this costume will tread and it’s between looking like an actual child or like an adult with a weird pink obsession. Suri pulls this look off because, she’s six, so it is essential for this costume to be complimented by a tiny kids purse (stuffed with candy), an oversized teddy bear and minimal makeup. Bonus points will be awarded to those who can convince someone to carry them around like a child.

Let the costume scramble continue! If you’re going out this weekend dressed as someone you’re not, chances are you’re pulling together and crafting like crazy. We’ve been here for you all week with Lana Del Rey, Marc Jacobs, and Kristen Stewart and now, what we can only assume will be a homerun this Halloween: Kimye.

Yup, that’s right, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (couple costume alert!). As with most of our ingenious costume ideas, the combo look is simple and easy to find on a short notice. For Kim it’s all about the beauty and the booty—clothing should be as tight as humanly possible (butt padding for bonus points) and natural eyelashes need to be hidden by the most aggressively long pair of fakes possible. For Kanye, keep it in leather and keep it in black—leather pants with a Givenchy Rottweiler Tee are the keys to keeping up with Yeezy. Hold hands everywhere you go and gaze deep into each other’s eyes, because after all, it’s love, you guys.
