The street style in and around the last two days of New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2013 shows were a frenzy of varsity jackets (Opening Ceremony), motorcycle jackets (Acne) see-through bags (from Kenzo to Claire’s) and Asian-inspired printed silks (Proenza Schouler, obv) jealousy-inducing heels (and even a few flats) as shot by our street style photographer Stefania Yarhi. Amidst the madness, Bill Cunningham was playing with some adorable bulldogs. You better bet we caught that too.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 8 Intro

Photography by Stefania Yarhi

Check out today’s street style photos from New York Fashion Week!»

Our go-to New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 street style photographer Stefania Yarhi has captured more fashion editors, models and celebrities from outside presentations from Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler among others.

It seems as though some of the stylish ladies that her lens captured are taking advantage of the warm September weather via their sartorial choices seen here. Vogue Japan editor Anna Dello Russo who has been making the rounds this Fashion Week Spring 2013 looked sleek and sexy in a form fitting short black dress, black sunglasses and gold jewellery that accented her golden summer tan, as did model Doutzen Kroes (who was spotted with Kate Bosworth at the Theyskens’ Theory show a few days ago) in a similar outfit of black tank top, shorts and sunglasses. Meanwhile, American Vogue editor Anna Wintour looked summery in a colourful printed dress, and Belgian model Hanne-Gaby Odiele seemed to think it’s still the middle of summer wearing white pants and a purple tie-dyed crop top (although if we had her stomach, we’d probably wear that all year round).

They said/We said: A new study has found that a woman reaches her sartorial prime at age 35

Gone are the days of teenage style icons (okay, maybe not the eternally best-dressed Fanning sisters), when Britney Spears’ plaid miniskirts were the norm. A British study by retailer CC has found that a woman reaches her sartorial prime at age 35. Three out of four women felt their style improved after their 20s with one in three women saying they looked the best they ever had in their 30s.

What gives? Apparently it all comes down to self-confidence, wisdom and maturity. Empowered mid-30-year-olds know how to reference the latest trends with enough confidence to carry them off.

So naturally, we made a list of our personal style icons (think: Chloë Sevigny, Kate Lanphear, Vanessa Paradis, the list goes on) and found that—shocker—they’re all around 35.

And it doesn’t stop at 35. Arguably the best part of this whole study was that iconoplast Helen Mirren beat out Kate Middleton (another 30-year-old) as the celebrity woman most considered to be in her prime. She’s 66! We can’t say we’re surprised though—have you seen her in a bikini? She’s a total knockout.

It’s high time we recognize the style contributions of the mature set. The success of blogs like Advanced Style has shown that style doesn’t fade with age. We aspire to dress like those women. Just look at two of M.A.C’s most recent collections: Carine Roitfeld and Iris Apfel. Both mature ladies and both with closets we’d gladly dive into.

This time around we’re outside Donna Karan and 3.1 Phillip Lim, catching colourful shots of neon—like Sarah Rutson’s bright demin jacket and Miroslava Duma’s tie-dyed Proenza top. “I was sent a picture of Kate Lanphear for inspiration,” says M.A.C Cosmetics senior artist Melissa Gibson of Greta Constantine’s no-makeup makeup for their Spring 2012 show. She describes the look as “worn-in wholesome”—the effect of sun-blanched skin after a day of walking the streets of New York City. “It’s blown out; you want to see the natural contours of the face.” This means monochromatic with a velvety texture, and no mascara or nail lacquer. On top of a base of M.A.C. Studio Sculpt concealer Gibson used just two shades of M.A.C. cream colour base: “Root” and “Shell.” For the eye, “Root” was applied all over, with “Shell” providing frosted highlights. Gibson also applied “Shell” to the lips—but after she used concealer to leave only a hint of the lip line visible.

They said/We said: Benches break at Balenciaga and—gasp!—everyone has to stand

Comments

Photography by Marc Piasecki/WireImage

Balenciaga’s SS 2012 show is all over Twitter and fashion news sites this morning, but not for the reasons you would expect. The headlines were enough to make any fashion editor cringe with sympathy: “Broken Benches Send Editors and Buyers Crashing to the Floor at Balenciaga Show” and “Balenciagea Attendees Forced to Stand Throughout the Show Because of Faulty Benches”. No one was hurt, thank God, but standing during a runway show? How terribly gauche!

Thanks to live Tweeting, we get to experience the event almost as if we were there. Runway show veterans the Traina sisters were the first to hear the bench creaking, and jumped up seconds before it came crashing to the floor. (Kate Lanphear and Eric Wilson weren’t so lucky!) But despite the surprise of a standing-room-only presentation (and difficulty for the shorter members of the audience), the show did go on. Everyone present, including the likes of Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Salma Hayek, and François-Henri Pinault, stood like champs, and watched the show as though the models were brides heading down the aisle. We can’t even imagine how horrible it would have been had Anna Wintour been one to fall on the floor.
