Today, the WWF is teaming up with grannies nationwide for National Sweater Day—a day to raise awareness about energy conservation. Led by spokesgranny Gladys, in her poinsettia-patterned knit, the campaign is meant to persuade the thermostat-inclined (guilty as charged) to don a sweater and turn down the heat. As Gladys says, grannies are “natural energy conservers” who put on a sweater when they get cold. And as we learn in the hilarious campaign video, you can sign up to receive a phone call from an on-staff granny who will nag gently remind you (as grannies do) to turn down the heat. We’ve picked our favourite knits to help you conserve energy for the day.

The daily steal: Nordic knit cardigan, $45
I’ve got a closet full of nothing and desperately need to buy some winter wear. This Nordic knit cardigan with kimono-style sleeves ($45, oldnavy.gapcanada.ca) will keep me perfectly toasty.

London street style: Chunky style
As the mercury begins its steady decline (are you ready for another Canadian winter?) this chunky knit sweater begins to look more and more seductive. We love the simple winter white and coal black palette and how this streeter mixed oversized and super-skinny proportions. Warm, cozy and sexy.

New York street style: Cable news
One of our favourite looks this fall is a cropped chunky-knit sweater over a full skirt, and this streeter seems to agree. She’s paired this cream cable-knit with a ruddy-streaked skirt and a swirl of colour on her scarf-print bag.

Toronto: Line makes their runway debut with bubbled knits, floor-sweeping scarves and cozy cashmere
Bringing in some big guns, Line sent a legion of top girls down the runway. We spied Alana Zimmer (who opened and closed the show), Taryn Davidson and Tara Gill all swathed from top to toe in cozy cashmere confections. Open weaves, loopy and fuzzed out furs, and heavy knits were crafted into long, luxurious maxi dresses, union suits, leggings, floor-sweeping scarves, dresses, sweaters and what our editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra could only describe as tea cozies for toes (the fluffy shoe coverings). The tonal looks felt fresh and I overheard one buyer contentedly sigh post-show, “I am very satisfied.” The standing O was well deserved.

MARK FAST Fall 2009. Mark Large/Zumapress.com/Keystone Press
Everywhere I’ve been seeing this intense, starkly angular, raven-haired woman, and wondering, how do I know that face? What magazine does she edit, again? And it’s only on the last day of London Fashion Week that I realize: duh. Erin O’Connor.

Vancouver: Larry, Grace and Terri

By Jennifer Campbell
Though we’ve started peppering our site with the signs of spring fashion, one look out the window will tell you that we’re still in the throes of winter. Luckily for us, designers sent superbly oversized knits down the fall runways.
In the same vein, designer and founding editor of theconveyorbelt.com Terri Potratz has created a line of eco-aware knits to keep out the chill. Larry is a collection of chunky scarves, shawls and cowls hand-knit with B.C. alpaca by Potratz herself.
