The top 10 strangest celebrity creative directors

Marc Jacobs Creative Director Diet Coke

Gone are the days when celebrities and designers were just, well, celebrities and designers. Now with every celebrity endorsement comes with a prestigious title—one that we’re used to being associated with helming a major fashion house—the creative director.

While we can’t be too certain what part of the process these celebrity endorsements play other than lending their face or fame to the product, it has become increasingly common for musicians, actors, and designers to add a creative director title to their CVs (aka their Wikipedia pages). With the recent news of Alicia Keys becoming the Global Creative Director of Blackberry, and today’s announcement of Marc Jacobs as the newest creative director of Diet Coke—succeeding Jean Paul Gaultier—we’ve decided to take a look back at some of the weirdest and flat out funniest creative directors to date.

From Lady Gaga to Givenchy: 8 beauty picks for winter’s all-black makeup trend

Black makeup trend

See our all-black makeup picks! »

It is always darkest before the dawn, so the proverb goes. By our calculations, the sun should be rising on planet fashion any day now: the Fall 2012 runways plunged us into a cavernous black hole of clothes worthy of Louise Brooks and Siouxsie Sioux, and haunting beauty looks that referenced Tim Burton’s films. That mood also infected the making of Lady Gaga’s fragrance, Fame. “I like black, especially what it has to do with fame, because it is a veil,” she says, tapping her knife-like ebony talons on the table at a hotel in New York. “It’s sort of like saying, ‘I don’t want you to see something.’” The R&D department struggled to create the noir-hued perfume that turns clear once airborne—an industry first. (Rumour has it one staff member was inspired when he spotted a bottle of black vodka behind the bar while out for a drink.) The request for an ominously coloured juice was music to the ears of its perfumer, Richard Herpin. It meant he didn’t have to exclude ingredients that can be visually unappealing when mixed together. “I could use anything I wanted,” he says. As fashion has taught us, black hides a multitude of sins.

Could Lady Gaga be Derek Zoolander’s new lady love?

Lady Gaga Zoolander Rumour

There is a walk-off for who gets to star alongside Derek Zoolander and Hansel McDonald in the sequel to Zoolander. At the top of the wish list is Lady Gaga, who has reportedly been offered $5 million to play the love interest of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, who play Zoolander and McDonald, respectively. A fierce love triangle!

Should Gaga refuse to take on the role, the list of contenders is comprised of actual models, who all know how to turn left on the runway and would need no help in perfecting Blue Steel from Zoolander.

The back-up models include Kate Upton, Kate Moss, Adriana Lima, and Heidi Klum (who was in the original). Filming is set to begin next year, so until we hear if Gaga has accepted the role we will ponder the question, should this part be given to a real model or can Gaga hold her own alongside the famous Zoolander? Vote in our poll!

Despite disappointment that The Great Gatsby’s original Christmas 2012 premiere date was pushed back to May 2013, the delay does mean there’s more time for exciting Gatsby rumours to unfold. Today’s edition: Lady Gaga may be recording a song for the film’s soundtrack.

According to British Vogue, actress Adelaide Clemens—who plays Myrtle’s sister in the film—spilled the beans earlier this week and also hinted that Prince may be contributing to the soundtrack. While nothing has been confirmed by Lady Gaga or the the producers of the film, we started thinking of how she could rework some of her existing songs for the film:

Lady Gaga is no stranger to wearing designer wears, and it looks as though she couldn’t even wait a week to try on some of Hedi Slimane’s debut creations for Saint Laurent Paris.

The designer showed his much talked about Spring 2013 collection last Monday during Paris Fashion Week, and although it’s received much flak in the industry, Lady Gaga seems to be on Team Hedi, as the first to have worn pieces from his collection literally straight off the runway. Read more »

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2013: See-through trousers at Dries Van Voten, peplum hems (and a bit of Gaga) at Mugler, champagne with Eddie Borgo and more

Eddie Borgo in Paris

It’s Paris. It’s raining. And the fashion cognoscenti are rethinking their footwear for Paris Fashion Week Spring 2013. Velvet slippers are out. And maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to leave the Hunter wellies at home. Here are some high and low lights from my first day in the city of light:

Champagne with Eddie Borgo

American jewellery designer Eddie Borgo rents a stunning apartment overlooking the Palais Royale to take appointments with press and buyers. It’s a brilliant move that often results in editors from competing magazines lingering on the chocolate brown sofa and sipping champagne. “They are usually numb by the time they get to Paris,” Borgo says. “I offer them a familial atmosphere.” That and great jewellery, including an enormous gold neck cuff and a new octoganal link used for chains and lattice-like balls strung like pearls.

Everything you need to know about Lady Gaga’s “Body Revolution” and why she’s fighting back at those who called her fat

Lady Gaga Body Revolution

It was 25 pounds that tipped the scales and lead Lady Gaga to launch a “Body Revolution.” While performing in Amsterdam last week a set of less than flattering photos (that appeared to be extremely photoshopped) emerged from the concert. Within hours sensationalized headlines like ‘The fat Lady Gaga sings’ and ‘Porker Face’ started making the rounds, questioning Lady Gaga’s supposed weight gain. Given the singer’s longstanding—and very public—fight against bullying, it would be hard for Mother Monster to take these mean girl comments from the media lying down.

Which is probably why yesterday Lady Gaga launched The Body Revolution on her site LittleMonsters.com. Read more »

Lady Gaga "Fame" Eau de Parfum Launch New York

Masks, tattoos and Mother Monster asleep on a couch. The party for Lady Gaga’s new fragrance, Fame ($59, thebay.com), was indeed unlike any other perfume launch. But hours before she hosted a masquerade ball at New York’s Guggenheim that brought out the A-list (Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang) and the WTF List (Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton), Lady Gaga was wide awake to talk to FASHION about her post-sex rituals (pizza and a movie!), what the colour black means to her and why being a New Yorker makes her pop star perfume better than other celeb scents.

For someone who hasn’t yet smelled Fame, can you describe your fragrance?
“It’s very sexual, it’s very addictive, but it is very chic. The metaphor of the bottle is that when you spray this product, all the good things about fame come out, and all the bad things stay inside. So when you buy this perfume, you can have the lovely smell of it, [while] I’ll be dealing with all the bullshit inside.” Read more »
