NYFW diary: Back-to-back-to-back with Tory Burch, J.Crew, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, and more!

Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012, Photography by Peter Stigter

From the prim to awesomely improper, yesterday at New York fashion week was another dizzying day of back-to-back-to-back shows. Let’s drill it down:

The liner notes at Tory Burch’s show yesterday referenced a proper girl who’s come undone by falling in love with the wrong sort of guy. Well, it might have been wrong for the girl, but on the runway it was very, very right. Self confessed, I’ve never prayed to the Burch alter, but the designer’s beautiful Fall collection might just have me changing my tune. Featuring pencil skirts, lacey dresses in wine, emerald, navy, and dusty rose, and some of the loveliest floral appliques and pearl details on done-up cardigans, the collection entered Carey Mulligan territory. Battle of the It bags: Which takes the cake for the most coveted?

The It Bag

The Kelly, the PS1, the Speedy: It bags have become so major over the years, that they scarcely even need a designer name attached! We discuss the appeal at length in our Winter 2012 issue, but today, we’re putting these bags to the test: in the battle of It bag supremacy, which comes out on top?

PFW style snaps: It girls and It accessories galore outside Christian Dior

Comments

Photography by Lewis Mirrett

The fashion flock was back in full force for Dior’s spring show, including a one Miss Leighton Meester (a Parisian design internship for this season of Gossip Girl in the works?). Outside the show, we spotted a parade of It accessories, including Christopher Kane‘s gel-filled PVC clutches (like the one pictured above), Miu Miu‘s Disney-esque glitter pumps, and Christian Louboutin‘s studded loafers. Have a peek!

Growing up Gomez: Selena Gomez is leaving the kiddie shows behind and moving on to more adult pursuits

Comments

Selena Gomez

By Dennis Hensley

On her new album, When the Sun Goes Down, Selena Gomez sings about self-acceptance (“Who Says”), infatuation (“Whiplash,” which Britney Spears co-wrote) and taming a misbehaving guy (“That’s More Like It,” co-written by Katy Perry). Yet when asked which track reveals the most about her, Gomez ditches the hearts and flowers and goes right for the jugular. “‘Bang Bang Bang’ is probably the most personal,” she says, referring to a snarky kiss-off anthem directed toward an ex, in which she coos put-downs like, “My new boy used to be a model…he looks way better than you” and “When I’m out having fun, you’re gonna be the one that’s broken.”

TIFF partysphere: Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, and Leighton Meester stop by Goodnight Gansevoort for late night back-alley fun

Comments

A BMW, a neon-orange Thomas Sabo string charm bracelet, and a ring of the buzzer got us into Goodnight this past weekend. It was there that New York haute hotel the Gansevoort had set up shop for late night TIFF after parties each night. Past the entrance pretenses, the private back-alley club offered its usual back-alley type of fun, only this time tricked out with the likes of Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Leighton Meester, and Alia Shawkat a.k.a. Arrested Development’s Maeby Fünke (as soon as we heard she was there, we seriously gunned it, but alas, she had already left. “Marry me!” is all we wanted to say.) Possibly the most fun parties of the week (and that’s saying a lot, given that virtually every soiree has been gangbusters), our favourite part of the evening(s) was frequenting the graffitied-up wall in the alleyway to pose for impromptu photo shoots and pretend we were in a music video.

TIFF 2011: Go inside the Variety Studio at Holt Renfrew and view snaps of Leighton Meester, Clive Owen, Emily Blunt, Ethan Hawke, and more!

Comments

Despite the long list of megawatt celebs (Clive Owen! Leighton Meester! Emily Blunt!) that rolled through the Variety Studio at Holt Renfrew this week, the vibe was decidedly relaxed. We stopped by on Saturday to do a bit of celeb stalking and instead of the flurry of stress we thought we’d be met with, the celebs were easy breezy, spending a couple of minutes in front of the camera, and then schmoozing, playing the new Nintendo DS, drinking wine or tea, and accepting gift bags full of swag from Moroccan Oil and Canadian jewellery company Anzie.

While we were there, we spotted Rachel Weisz, alongside her Deep Blue Sea co-star Tom Hiddleston, looking breathtaking (we mean that literally) in a Giambattista Valli resort leopard dress, with a simple shape and sky-high black pumps. Leighton Meester, who was interviewed alongside scene-pros Allison Janney and Oliver Platt for their film The Oranges, was looking sweet in a Louis Vuitton resort 2012 pleated dress, a blazer by Nonoo, and pink and black Pierre Hardy wedges. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Olsen and Sarah Paulson sported matching prints.

Overheard at TIFF: Leighton Meester is really into elaborate headbands. Go figure.

Comments

Overheard: While arriving the Variety studio at Holt Renfrew yesterday, Leighton Meester points to the elaborate headband of one of the store’s greeters and says, “That. Is. So. Cute.” If they know what’s good for them, the folks at Holts better get on making about a million more of those. Whatever Blair Waldorf says goes.

Celeb poll: Which red carpet star are you most excited to see at TIFF?

Comments

The official TIFF guest list has been released and, as usual, it’s major! Amongst the cast of glittering names, heralded directors and studly leading men (would you like a side of Ryan Gosling/Alexander Skarsgard/Brad Pitt with that?), there promises to be some serious It girl action on the red carpet with everyone from Tilda to Keira to Blake to Carey heading to town. Stay tuned for our coverage leading up to and during the festival, but in the meantime, let’s indulge in a little girl crush freak-out. Who are you most excited to see?
