While there were many head-turning moments on the red carpet at last night’s Golden Globes Awards, four beauty trends stand out above the rest. Blue eyeshadow is making a strong case for its return in popularity—but don’t fret, this isn’t the pastel shade that dominated the ’80s. Kerry Washington wore blue with a multi-dimensional shimmer and Nicole Kidman used it add some colour to her otherwise almost-monochrome look. Lena Dunham and Anne Hathaway showed us two ways to style short hair—we’ll let you decide who did it better. Also interesting: A number of stars opted to keep it simple, forgoing the typical updo and letting their hair down for a natural look on the red carpet. And if you thought there was a lot of red and orange last night, what about the lipstick? We reveal who took home the award for best lip colour at last night’s Golden Globes. Read more »

Golden Globes 2013 Red Carpet

Last night’s 70th annual Golden Globe Awards was a pretty epic lesson in red carpet trends. From the bright colours to the mermaid tails to the boob shows, the A-list all seemed to have consulted with each other’s stylists before arriving at the event. Red rose to the top of the colour charts, making bright appearances on Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture, Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta and Claire Danes in Versace. Richer shades were worn by Naomi Watts in Zac Posen, Taylor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier and Lena Dunham in Zac Posen (the verdict’s still out on Dunham’s dress, though we really don’t like to speak negatively about such a precious human).

Pastels also seemed a strong message on the red carpet, with every hue in the candy coated rainbow being tested against the natural beauty of the night’s various stars. Jessica Alba‘s signature bronzed glow was offset by her creamsicle orange Oscar de la Renta trumpet gown. Meanwhile, Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain chose the most ideal aquamarine on the colour wheel for her Calvin Klein gown. Bravo!

On the flip side, stark black and white (and even a combo of both with Julianne Moore’s graphic black and white Tom Ford column dress) predictably showed up en masse on stars like Anne Hathaway in beaded white Chanel, Amanda Seyfried in stunning white Givenchy and Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman, who were both clear standouts in statement-making black Alexander McQueen dresses.

And the mermaid tails, oh those mermaid tails. Thought they were retired? Think again. The ole pyramid hem is proving to be on a clear comeback, as worn by Amy Adams, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Jessica Alba.

As for the aforementioned boob-show, one flip through out Golden Globe red carpet gallery would show quite the bountiful selection. And really, is there much wrong with that?

Paint your nails like Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa: Deborah Lippmann is doing a Girls nail polish collection

Deborah Lippmann Girls nail polish

Our obsession with HBO’s hit series Girls knows no bounds. And now we can further show our support-slash-solidarity for the four twenty-something characters thanks to a nail polish collaboration with Deborah Lippmann.

A four-colour, limited edition Deborah Lippmann Girls nail polish set was just announced and will launch in January 2013. Representative of the four Girls girls, the set includes a colour named for each: there’s “Hannah” (described as a “hapless hunter green”), “Marnie” (a “prim and proper pink”), “Shoshanna” (a “virtuous vivid violet”) and “Jessa” (a “bohemian burgundy”).

Go inside Allison Williams’ bag! »

Girls is back. Girls is back! One of our most intense cultural obsessions returns with its Season 2 premiere on January 13, 2013 at 9pm on HBO Canada, and what better way to celebrate than with a look inside the beautiful bag of one of its beautiful stars, Allison Williams.

Our former cover girl was in Toronto last week to promote the new episodes as well as the release of season one on DVD and Blu-Ray (Its accompanying book of Lena Dunham’s tweets is epic, FYI) and graciously dumped the contents of her Jason Wu Daphne shoulder bag. While her stuff was being photographed, I super-fan quizzed her on the return of Booth Johnathan as well as what the next season looks like for character Marnie Michaels, who seemed to be floundering sans-boyfriend and roommate at the end of season one. “She’s having a rough go. She’s without the same comforts that she had in season one, so she’s very influx, and that is something that I know that I, and a lot of my friends can relate to,” she said. “When it rains, it really does seem to pour especially when you’re in your mid-twenties when you don’t have a lot of foundation already laid down it can just throw everything into upheaval at once—job, everything.”

Girls is back! Is it possible that Season Two might look better than the first?

Comments

There has been a gaping hole in our hearts since season one of Girls ended. Today, there has been a small repair to that hole with the trailer for Season Two, which premieres on January 13, 2013.

If it’s even possible, the trailer hints that the second season may be funnier, wittier, and more entertaining from the first. Lena Dunham’s character, Hannah, returns in search of a “kind, responsible, sexy” boyfriend while trying to keep Adam, her “sociopath” ex, at bay. Hilarity is sure to ensue. As for the rest of the gang, Shoshanna is wearing fascinators like she’s Kate Middleton and appears to be dating Ray while Marnie’s love life and career spirals out of control.

This season boasts guest appearances from Donald Glover, Patrick Wilson, and more. This just adds to the ever-growing excitement that we feel for the premiere of season two. As we count down the days (44) until January 13, this taste will have to do. Excuse us while we hit replay 10 more times.

It girl must-reads! Both Lena Dunham and Alexa Chung are writing books

Lena Dunham Alexa Chung book deals

It’s a good week for fashionable female icons. Just a mere day after it was announced that Lena Dunham is writing a book, it has been revealed that Alexa Chung is planning on doing the same thing.

While both books will offer advice and personal anecdotes, the comparisons end there. According to British Vogue, Alexa Chung’s “will allow fans to step inside her world, as she reveals how she decides what to wear, her fashion influences and style tips.” Due out in September 2013, the book will feature Chung’s writing, as well as personal photographs, drawings and sketches—some of which can already be seen if you follow her on Twitter. (Fingers are crossed for an entire chapter on quirky nail art inspiration!)

While Alexa Chung has secured a publisher, Lena Dunham’s search for one is part of the publicity for her forthcoming book. Read more »

Lena Dunham and Zooey Deschanel are no longer nail art BFFs (But Zooey’s Emmys manicure is still adorable!)

Zooey Deschanel Emmy Awards Nail Art TV Manicure

Despite Lena Dunham and Zooey Deschanel talking and tweeting about coordinating their nail art for the 2012 Emmys, it seems the two didn’t actually follow through with their matching manicure plans. Even though Lena Dunham kept her Emmy awards nails simple, she did stay on trend with her colour choice, opting for Deborah Lippmann’s natual-looking “Fashion” nail polish. The taupe shade complemented her Prada gown and kept the focus on her makeup. And we have to say: Lena Dunham does a dramatic blue smoky eye well. (It’s very Chanel Couture Spring 2012, no?)

Zooey Deschanel did, however, show up on the red carpet with an impressive sparkly nail art design, complete with glittering mini TVs on her thumbs and Swarovski crystals overtop a pale orange polish across all other fingers. Read more »

Emmys 2012 Best Dressed

There was a surprise winner on the red carpet at last night’s Emmys awards show and it happened to be the colour yellow. It’s safe to say many of the stars had a sunny outlook for the night.

Julianne Moore, Claire Danes, and Kaley Cuoco all sported dresses in egg yolk yellow. Moore opted for pieces from Raf Simmons’ first couture collection for Christian Dior, Danes wore Lanvin which flattered her pregnant belly, and Cuoco wore Angel Sanchez.

Our favourite funny girls, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey, kept their looks simple and classic. Dressed in a cream Balenciaga, black sequined Stella McCartney, and burgundy Vivienne Westwood, respectively, these comedians looked anything but silly.

There were some could-be-prom-queen moments from Zooey Deschanel and January Jones, whose trains were as long as they were wide. Deschanel had a cutesy manicure (of course) to go with her Reem Acra fluffy gown that featured a tiny TV on her nail. Turns out wearing tulle on the red carpet is harder than it seems because Zooey Deschanel got her gown caught on Lucy Liu’s metallic Versace dress. Oh, the agony!

Despite Zooey Deschanel and January Jones’ large looks, many women opted for body hugging dresses. Sofia Vergara resembled a sparkling mermaid in Zuhair Murad which featured a between the boobs cut-out and Hayden Panettiere was feeling blue in her bollywood inspired Marchesa gown. Michelle Dockery also hopped aboard the blue train in a Louis Vuitton satin dress and Nicole Kidman joined as well with a teal embellishment.
