My father, the skin-care guru

My father is the biggest skin-care nut I know. No, he’s not a dermatologist. And, no, he doesn’t work in the beauty industry. His obsession started when he tried a few of my mom’s products, and now his interest in them far surpasses hers. Amazed by the results, he wanted to see what else a little extra attention could do for his skin. I know mothers are typically the ones who teach their daughters about beauty, but it my was dad who taught me the value of a good toner, the zit-fighting power of toothpaste, and how wonderful it feels to steam your face over a sink of hot water (along with showing me how to scramble eggs and throw a punch). So, in honour of Father’s Day, here are five of my most-loved products that my dad introduced me to.

In its early days, Lush couldn’t afford bottles for its shampoos, so it made a hard copy of its hair wash that didn’t need a vessel. The brand’s latest compact offering, Tiny Hands Solid Serum ($6, lush.ca), features a skin-softening trifecta—shea butter, aloe and argan oil. We were skeptical, but when we rubbed the bar between our palms, it totally worked.

Foundation is something I cannot live without. My olive skintone is an eclectic assortment of browns and yellows, so complexion perfecting is a ritual. While I aim to get as close as possible to the airbrushed version of my skin, come summer, the hoards of tinted moisturizers I’ve tried just don’t cut it. As the days heat up, my full face of makeup slowly melts off through the day—a problem I never encountered in my native Britain.
