Olivier Theyskens has finally landed a full-time gig. The Belgian designer has been named artistic director of Theory. Theyskens’ first collection for Theory will be revealed during the Fall 2012 season.  [WWD]

Jenny McCarthy appeared on Chelsea Lately and talked about meeting Stefano Gabbana at MTV Europe’s Video Music Awards early in her career…and being stripped, literally, of her head-to-toe Dolce & Gabbana outfit after her boyfriend assaulted Gabbana after a misunderstanding. It appears French costume designer Jeny Temime may have borrowed too heavily from an Alexander McQueen design for the last Harry Potter movie. [LelaLondon, via Refinery 29] Read more »

M.A.C pulls the Rodarte makeup collection

Comments

M.A.C has announced that they won’t be shipping the makeup collection created by Rodarte‘s Kate and Laura Mulleavy. The collection, which, like the pair’s Fall 2010 collection, was inspired by Mexico–specifically the troubled town of Ciudad Juárez. Controversy ignited around the line after some bloggers protested that the names of the products–a polish called “Juarez,” a lipstick named “Ghost Town”–glamourized poverty and violence against women in the factory town. M.A.C responded by offering to donate profits from the collection to charitable initiatives in Ciudad Juárez, but yesterday posted the following on their Facebook page: Read more »

Fashion news: Marc Jacobs’ guilty pleasure, fashion’s Farmville and Rodarte and M.A.C. apologize for their controversial line

Rodarte and M.A.C Cosmetics have sparked quite the controversy with their recent makeup collaboration, where a nail lacquer shade was named after Juárez, a Mexican town that happens to be notorious for its high rape and murder rates. The Rodarte designers have already apologized, “We never intended to make light of this serious issue and we are truly sorry,” and M.A.C sent an email to editors saying they will be changing the name of the shade. Just because he designs for some of the world’s biggest luxury hounds, doesn’t mean Marc Jacobs doesn’t have time for the other side of the spectrum: “OK, recently I watched every episode of Jersey Shore‘s first season. I don’t know if it was any good and I certainly didn’t learn anything, but it was definitely hypnotic and it gave my brain a vacation.” [The Cut] Read more »

Want to buy a piano signed by Lady Gaga?

M.A.C’s newest Viva Glam spokesperson, Lady Gaga, was in Tokyo for the Asia launch of her and Cyndi Lauper’s shades of the charitably-minded lipstick. Her performance was inspired by a Japanese wedding, which of course means a white lace catsuit wrapped with…something, and a veil, from Japanese labels Somarta and Fur Fur, respectively. (Any guesses as to what’s wrapped around Gaga? Tulle maybe? Suggestions welcome in the comments!) There were also tighty whities, cherry blossoms and a giant papier-mâche rabbit head involved.

Artist Terence Koh, who is known, among other things, for covering Lady Gaga’s Birkin with marker, designed a Viva Glam-inspired piano for the performance, which the singer has signed. If you absolutely must get your hands on a piano played by Lady Gaga, it’s being auctioned off in New York at a charity event thrown by Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour next Friday (theartofelysium.org).

In the wake of Alexander McQueen‘s death, the question of “what now” is obviously on everyone’s mind. While long-term plans remain unknown,  his upcoming Paris show is supposedly still scheduled to be presented. The collection was apparently completed a week prior to the designer’s death, and sources say that there is no change to the delivery dates of showpieces commissioned specifically for the runway. Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper are the next faces of M.A.C’s Viva Glam. “People think if you’re strong about your sexuality, you must have a d–k,” Gaga told WWD. “And that’s what this is about. You can be strong about your sexuality and be a smart woman who wears lipstick and high heels and looks pretty.” [WWD]

Marc Jacobs is suing Christian Audigier’s line Ed Hardy for allegedly knocking off one of his handbags. Jacobs’ legal reps state that any infringement “has been intentional and wil[l]ful, calculated specifically to trade off the goodwill that plaintiffs have developed in their successful Marc Jacobs Pretty Nylon tote bags.” [Vogue UK] Read more »

Surprise – Rodarte gets their own fashion show at the Olympics. The New York Times magazine asked Kate and Laura Mulleavy to design 13 outfits for athletes, including figure skaters, a ski jumper and snowboarders. Figure skater Johnny Weir will be decked out in head-to-toe crocheted Rodarte; we’re curious to see what the athletes will be wearing as they compete outdoors. [Racked]

Adding to their whirlwind month, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have launched a new denim line, Textile Elizabeth and James. Launching in March, the three-jean collection is ‘70s inspired, both in style and name: there’s the Hendrix, the Stevie and the Joni, all featuring a hippie twist, be it through a high-waist or bellbottom leg. The jeans will be sold exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Intermix with plans to expand the collection to a full lifestyle collection in the fall. [WWD] Read more »

Lady Gaga has been named the new face of M.A.C’s AIDS Fund campaign. But she didn’t even show her face last night at the Accessories Council’s ACE awards, where she hid behind a netted lace headpiece.  We can tell it’s you from a mile away, Gaga. [The Cut]

Gisele Bündchen is on her way to becoming a fully licensed pilot as well as a new mommy. Next week she’ll take her in-air test—doesn’t the baby bump get in the way? [People]
