Beth Ditto, singer and long-time fashion darling (the Kaiser loves her) is the subject of makeup gossip today: M.A.C Cosmetics announced that she has collaborated on a new collection, set to debut in June. Video: Jac stars in a cute teaser for Chanel’s Spring makeup and nail polish!

Comments

If you’d forgotten all about Chanel’s trio of nail polishes for Spring—or perhaps you were just distracted by the shiny introduction of Diwali!—the luxury brand has released a teaser video that’s sure to make it top of mind. Starring Monika ‘Jac’ Jagaciak (who walked in their Spring 2012 show) it’s hard not to start tapping your feet while watching the snappy video. We also love that Chanel has put the focus on peachy-orange shades: Remember the Pantone colour of the year? How appropriate.

Afternoon beauty fix: The trick to finding the perfect foundation for darker skin tones

Comments

I have dark skin and have a tough time finding foundation for my complexion, especially because it changes slightly depending on the season. Got any tips?
No matter your skin tone, finding the perfect foundation to match can be a challenge, to say the least. The simplest solution is to buy two shades, one slightly lighter than the other, and mix them together until you create a hue that matches, no matter the season. In terms of foundations that are easy to blend, we like Vasanti Liquid Cover Up Oil-Free Foundation ($23, vasanticosmetics.com) because it is water-based and highly malleable, and available in a wide range of colour options. Cover Girl True Blend foundation ($13 at drug stores) also offers a good range of rich hues that are oil-free and non-comedogenic—which will assist in the protection of complexions that are prone to break-outs. Grab your favourite foundation brush, start blending, and good luck!

Afternoon beauty fix: A little blush will make your bronzer last all winter long

Comments

I feel like my face looks too fair and round without bronzer, but I heard it’s a faux pas to wear in the winter. What shade of blush should I wear instead?
The faux pas that you’re referring to is true… sort of. There are certain types of bronzer that are suitable for summer tans—they’re metallic and somewhat glittery. On the other hand, bronzers that are relatively shimmer-free are ideal for delivering a touch of colour and shapely definition to your face, no matter the time of year. We like M.A.C’s Cremeblend Blush in “Tea Petal” ($20, maccosmetics.com) because it’s easy to blend and contour, plus it has a subtle brown base, which acts as a nice alternative to bronzer. Apply it just below your cheekbones and use your fingers to blend the pigment upwards towards your temples. A second step worth considering is adding a bright pop of blush to the apples of your cheeks. This will complement the contoured colour on your cheeks and help to add a little warmth to your face—a must in the winter! Purple-based shades match well with bronze, and we especially love them for their ability to look bright while still adding depth. Our top purple picks include Cover Girl & Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in “Lush Berry” ($15 at drug stores), with a rich raspberry-red finish, and the lilac tint of Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Color in “Violet” Orchid ($30 at Holt Renfrew) which looks light and lovely.

Power tools: Meet the new guard of plugged-in beauty treatments

POWER TOOLS

Ever since their invention, cellphones and computer hard drives have been shedding their clunky forms as if mimicking Bill Gates’s eyewear evolution from giant geek frames to rimless spectacles. But it took a diy movement to kick-start the same downsizing in the beauty world, allowing popular in-office technology to come home with us. We were able to take matters such as hair removal and wrinkle fighting into our own hands when IPL (intense pulsed light) and led (light-emitting diodes) were incorporated into handheld devices we could use ourselves. That meant zero downtime for us and our bank accounts. Here, a look at 2.0 versions of trusted favourites, as well as some new tools to add to your workbench.
