Runway to Real Life: Easy tips to help you master Moschino’s smoky eye makeup!

Inspired by Spain’s rich cultural traditions and mythologies, Moschino’s Spring 2012 collection definitely brought the drama. Models sashayed with toreador swagger, wearing ruffled dresses, jingling gold bells and even donning bullfighter hats. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux dreamed up a look that was a tribute to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, anchored by a strong brow, dramatic smoky eyes and contoured cheeks. The smudginess of the eyes had a painterly quality that was a perfect accompaniment to the vivid collection.

Since the classic black smoky eye is essentially the makeup equivalent of a little black dress, this is a great and wearable look for any special event. We’ll share some tips and tricks for creating a Moschino-worthy version that will stay put all night long.

The cat-eye: We look to icons of different eras for inspiration—plus, tips for painting your own

The cat-eye

The cat-eye is having a moment. Celia Ellenberg takes us through its many versions over the years and finds out how to execute them.

While spring tends to signal the arrival of all beauty things light and bright, the runways told a different story this season as designers embraced a certain graphic cosmetic accoutrement that’s seen an impressive evolution over the past few centuries. Behold, the rebirth of the cat-eye. Black-rimmed upper lash lines were the makeup look of choice at shows such as Ruffian and Dolce & Gabbana, and while the backstage miracle workers made it look easy, mastering the perfect flick on your own can be a different story. We’ve gathered eight eyeliner icons and asked Hourglass Cosmetics’ artistic director Gina Brooke and makeup artist Pati Dubroff to weigh in on whether the liquid pen is truly mightier than the kohl pencil when it comes to crafting the perfect winged liner. Because, according to Brooke, “if you use the right products, getting the look is not an issue.”

Quotable: Carrie Underwood’s preferred method of makeup application? The “bigger is better” pile

Comments

Country singer and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood is one of those stars whose red carpet look is often compared to that of Kim Kardashian—in that she tends to practice the art of “more is more” when it comes to makeup. While we’ve often wondered why the presumably fresh-faced singer has a makeup artist who piles it on, it turns out the only one to blame is Underwood herself. When asked about her hair and makeup people, Underwood revealed:

“That’s two people I don’t have [on tour]. When you’re on stage, it’s a little bit different than real life. You can kind of pile it on—and you need to for things to show up. It’s kind of whatever, you can play. You can do things you wouldn’t really do. You can put glitter on your eyes. Big hair. The bigger, the better. It’s fun. It’s a nice relaxing time, a calm before the storm, if you will.”

Runway to Real Life: A lighter version of Rodarte’s starry blue eyes for Spring 2012

Rodarte’s Spring 2012 collection had two magical muses: Van Gogh’s iconic work Starry Night and Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, and the opaque navy blue smoky eyes echoed the rich colours found in both. To balance the dramatic feel of the collection, Nars makeup artist James Kaliardos painted eyeshadow all the way up to the brow bone. While this certainly made a statement on the runway, it’s a bit too Maleficent-esque for day-to-day. With a few minor adjustments, however, this look is perfect for a night when you want to sparkle.
