Luella Bartley appointed design director at Marc by Marc Jacobs

Luella Bartley Marc by Marc Jacobs

Looks like you can’t have it all. Or that’s the message that’s coming across with the recent staff shift over at Marc Jacobs. Jacobs, who for the past 13 years has been acting as creative and design director for Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs and as artistic director at Louis Vuitton, is finally lightening his load. The designer is handing over the torch for his Marc by Marc Jacobs label to Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier.

Bartley, whose own label Luella folded four years ago after a major investor pulled out unexpectedly, has been greatly missed on the fashion circuit. The designer, who was once thought to be on her way to becoming the next big thing in British fashion, is ready for a come back and what better place to start. The situation is win-win for both Bartley and Marc Jacobs International, who’s own CEO Robert Duffy has recently commented on the increasing staleness of the diffusion line. Bartley’s old label was a favourite to hip-young-things like Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Chloë Sevigny. As a designer she’s been praised for her fun and quirky aesthetic, and is sure to breath some je ne sais quoi back into the Marc by Marc Jacobs brand.

From Singapore to New York, in just a few short weeks the new Resort 2014 collections have taken us from one side of the planet to the other. So far, the collections are getting us excited for those fictitious rising temperatures designers seem to believe exist in January.

Both Tory Burch and Moschino’s Cheap and Chic lines kept things above-the-knee, offering a selection of short shorts and playful minis. Burch’s Moroccan influenced collection featured an exotic array of colourful vacation-ready prints while Moschino Cheap and Chic amped up the fun factor with floral prints and tie-dyes. On the runway at Christian Dior an equally flashy collection featured florals, lace and ladylike silhouettes not to mention intense colour blocking.

Smurfashion! Illustrator Alexsandro Palombo transforms Karl, Anna and Marc into our favourite cartoon forest dwellers

When photos surfaced of Karl Lagerfeld sporting the now famous “Karl Who” tote by French label Naco Paris, we knew the fashion parody trend was one that was here to stay. It wasn’t long before fashion’s fresh young things were spotted lingering outside NYFW shows in “Ballinciaga” tees by American streetwear label Conflict of Interest and “Homiés” toques by Reason Clothing.

There’s something refreshing about the fashion parody craze, whose goal is to make light of society’s obsession with must-have fashion items and their designers. Italian artist Alexsandro Palombo intends to put his own clever twist on fashion’s most wanted. What’s the big idea? Smurfs, of course! That’s right, Palombo, who specializes in design and fashion illustration, has created a Smurf for everyone from Donatella Versace to Grace Coddington. The fun doesn’t stop there, Palombo’s designs include a Smurfashion Village where one may stumble upon a Smurf version of Marc Jacobs standing in front of his Louis Vuitton monogram printed Smurf hut, or John Galliano pouting in front of a locked up Smurf Maison Dior.

The fashionistas-gone-blue remind us of Barneys’ holiday collaboration with Disney, which featured a slew of fashion VIPs in cartoon version. Palombo has shown his designer spoofing talents in the past with a Fashion Simpsons series depicting a lovable yellow version of the industry’s most powerful individuals. Palombo’s chic Smurf series was sketched up to celebrate the ‘50s Belgian TV sensation, The Smurfs. We think the super stylish Smurf-pack has never looked so good! All artwork is available for download on Palombo’s blog.

Met Gala 2013: The 25 best dressed on fashion’s most important red carpet

Met Gala 2013

The build up to this year’s Met Gala has been major. Designers, celebrities and the fashion elite have been scrambling to piece together a look that fits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s theme, PUNK: Chaos to Couture and while admittedly, the punk-inspired looks were few and far between, we were certainly thrilled with a few.

Channeling her own recent V Magazine cover, Miley Cyrus went latter day Debbie Harry with platinum blonde spikes and a long fishnet Marc Jacobs dress. Anne Hathaway debuted a similarly bleached bob alongside her date and dresser for the night, Valentino Garavani, sending the twittersphere in a tizzy.

Co-chairs of the event Riccardo Tisci and Rooney Mara went punk-light with Mara in a beautifully detailed white lace Givenchy dress and a pop of crimson on the lips.

Also wearing Givenchy was none other than Beyoncé—the honourary chairperson for this year’s event. Pairing her custom-designed strapless black and gold printed gown with blinged out boots in the same shade, Queen Bey proved for her second year in a row that last on the red carpet is always best.

After finally receiving the Anna Wintour nod of approval, Kim Kardashian made an appearance at the Met Gala 2013 in a floral-print Givenchy dress with baby-daddy, Kanye West at her side.

Someone who is more known for consistently nailing red carpet looks than Kimye, is Emma Watson and she hit a high note yet again in a skin-bearing Prabal Gurung dress with a single silver drop earring hanging from her left ear.

And while Kristen Stewart has held fast to her role as the face of Balenciaga’s Florabotanica, she strayed from the house’s new wears, opting instead, for a crimson Stella McCartney pantsuit.

So who was the best dressed at the Met Gala 2013? Vote in our poll!

Welcome a punch of black-and-white graphics to your spring wardrobe with zig zags, checkers and Op art inspiration. Like a page out of Diana Vreeland’s mid-sixties book, photographer Chris Nicholls and stylist Zeina Esmail proved that a relative absence of colour doesn’t mean you can’t make a statement, combining some of Spring 2013′s greatest standouts from Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Kors with Twilight Zone style backdrops in this May 2013 issue photo shoot. And that hair? Eat your heart out, Vidal Sassoon.

What’s in your bag, Roksanda Ilincic?

Bag Roksanda Ilincic

Go inside Roksanda Ilincic’s bag »

There are a few things you can safely assume about a designer just by looking at their stuff. And in the case of London-based designer Roksanda Ilincic, you can figure this: She’s arty. Between the inspiration behind her Spring 2013 collection (an Opposites Day combo of Niki de Saint Phalle and Josef Albers) and Fall 2013’s fabric play (she blended baby pink PVC and taffeta on evening coats and used laminated lace on dresses), she’s a regular renaissance girl. You can also figure she’s ladylike inclined, given her consistent leanings towards dresses, collared coats and embellished eveningwear). One thing, however, that you (or at least I) couldn’t have known, is how breathtaking she is to behold IRL. I met the Serbian-born beauty last month when she was in town at The Room at Hudson’s Bay and was completely confounded at first glance. The violet eyed, porcelain-skinned, raven-haired designer is over six feet in heels. She’s the perfect model for her clothing, (she wore the opening look from her spring collection during daytime press interviews and this dress from fall for dinner later that night at the buzzy Bent restaurant) as is the similarly slender Duchess of Cambridge, who has worn her dresses in the past. “It’s a huge privilege and such honour and to have somebody like her wearing my dresses. I’m just really, truly honoured I must say,” she raved. To boot, she carries a beautiful purse—a purple satin clutch from her own collection that mirrors the effects of Mary Poppins’ bag. So, as if this ado hasn’t enticed you enough, have a look for yourself.

Spring 2013’s statement sunglasses trend: 14 attention-getting frames in every price range

Spring 2013 Sunglasses Trend

See our 14 statement sunglasses picks »

Sunglasses for spring may not be considered entirely groundbreaking, but this season it’s time to cast aside the traditional aviators and think bigger, brighter, and bolder. Added bonus: a pair that blocks 100 per cent of UVA and UVB rays protects your eyes from being damaged so picking up a couple pairs is really for your health.

The Spring 2013 runways got us thinking about oversized and unique frames but Ron Arad’s out of this world frames sold us on the fact that statement sunglasses are the one accessory we really need. The Israeli architect has not only created completely new shapes for frames but has transformed how they are made by making them completely adjustable, hingeless and only using one piece of material for an entire pair. If that isn’t taking sunglasses to a new and more innovative place, we don’t know what is.
