MFW Diary: Dolce & Gabbana takes top honours in our Oscars-style recap of day five in Milan

Comments

Photography by Peter Stigter

In celebration of the Oscars, I’ve decided to give out a few awards of my own for day five of Milan Fashion Week. Drum roll, por favor.

BEST SHOW DU JOUR goes to… Dolce & Gabbana. The moving opera soundtrack (ah, I love Pavarotti!), the ornate rose-strewn chandeliers, the heavily embroidered Sicilian-inspired looks (think black and gold, beads, crystals, lace, and jewels); Dolce & Gabbana was the fashion moment of the day!

MFW Diary: From MaxMara’s sailor stripes to ADR’s smoking hot Prada flame shoes, the news (and a little gossip) from Milan

Comments

Max Mara (left) and Prada (right) shot by Peter Stigter

Best in show: Prada. The moment the first look (head-to-toe noir with glittering embellishment) hit the graphic purple plush carpet/runway I was in love. It felt classic—very old school Prada (mixed-up prints, clean lines, slick structured bags).

The new suit for fall: Prada’s tailored jacket and cropped trousers. Regardless if you prefer the jumble of mix-and-match prints or the screaming solid orange version, at some point you’ll want them all.

Hottest shoes off the runway: Anna Dello Russo’s Prada Spring 2012 flame shoes.

Susie Sheffman: How to wear prints

Photography: Sheffman by Nicole Stafford

When it comes to pairing prints and patterns, our fashion director, Susie Sheffman, is the resident mixologist. She’s also Marni-obsessed: “When I discovered the outlet in Milan, it was game over,” she says. “Cardigans, sexless sandals and printed sweet nothings have been making their way into my suitcase on my twice-yearly pilgrimages to Milan fashion week ever since.” Two weeks ahead of the Marni at H&M collection (launching on March 8), she shares her tips on mastering this spring trend.

Spring beauty report 2012: Retro influences

Spring beauty report 2012: Backward glance

By Lesa Hannah and Sarah Daniel

Liquid liner hasn’t lost its momentum, but makeup artists left last season’s ’60s mod influence behind and moved back a decade to the ’50s, with inspirations like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. At Jonathan Saunders, artiste Lucia Pieroni gave models a Stepford streak, inspired by a mid-century Miami housewife who likes her Valium, she says. At Marni, makeup artist Tom Pecheux applied a cinnamon-coloured flick instead of the standard noir, which was inspired by a terracotta clutch in the collection and brought “a sophisticated finish to the face,” he says. Hair-stylists also mined the past for ideas—from the ’20s to the ’70s, and every decade in between. At Diane von Furstenberg, teased ’60s French twists were “textured so it’s rustic and earthy, and quite simple in shape,” says coiffeur Orlando Pita. But at Jean Paul Gaultier, it was an old photograph that led to the loose wartime rolls that hair guru Guido Palau fastened to the top of the head. Our favourite was the sterile-looking ’50s faux bob at Jil Sander, in all its vacuum-sealed nurse practitioner perfection.
