NYFW diary: Lincoln Center’s secret service and a tonal palette at BCBG

It’s only the first day of New York fashion week but they are everywhere.  At the front doors. Beside the washrooms. On the plastic covered runway before the lights dim. They are the men in black (and not because it’s fashionable). They are the Lincoln Center’s fashion week security squad. I spotted a cluster of these fine gents patrolling the runway pre-BCBG Max Azria this morning. I don’t envy them. Day in and day out they deal with pre-and post-show stampedes, Super Bowl-worthy pushing, seat stealers and the industry’s best (and worst) liars (“I have to get backstage to see the designer, I’m his cousin/sister/former babysitter”). If you ever have the opportunity to meet one, do so. Bet you a pair of front row seats at the show of your choice you can’t make one smile.

Blackface keeps popping up in fashion editorials–on the heels of Lara Stone’s racial transformation and Tyra’s ANTM shoot comes V as the next culprit. [The Cut]

Karl Lagerfeld will star in a short documentary that follows him on September 10th as he worked at the Chanel offices. The film “The Blonde and I” even caught the designer whipping up a quick outfit sketch before speeding off to an airport photo shoot where he remarked, “I look good on the runway.” Of course you do Karl, you look good everywhere. NYFW news: Snuggie vs. Slanket, Courtney loves attention, Gaga disappoints fans and more

The Snuggie runway show had it all: prints, colours and canine sizes to suit every Snuggie occasion. But according to Joan Rivers, the Snuggie is a rip off of the Slanket. “I think the Slanket is an item of fashion, because he was on my show How’d You Get So Rich?” Rivers said. “And he was the original — the Snuggie took it from the Slanket.” Sounds like a classic case of which came first, the Snuggie or the Slanket? The buzz was high surrounding the appearance of Lady Gaga at Out Magazine’s party last night. The pop singer showed up an hour after the scheduled end of the party, refused press, and gave no performance, disappointing her eagerly-awaiting fans. Did we mention the wannabe diva left after a mere 15 minutes? [WSJ] Read more »

New York: Matthew Williamson, Rodarte, Derek Lam, Diesel, Max Azria and Narciso Rodriguez Fall 2009

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON Fall 2009. Photography by Peter Stigter

Theme for the day: Running in heels. And no, I am not speaking of Marie Claire‘s highly anticipated new reality show, but rather my crazy day. My late-night Walgreens run for gel foot cushions will have been worth it.

Up first was Matthew Williamson where front-rowers included Rachel Zoe, Monet Mazur, Joy Bryant (who is quickly becoming the female Kanye West of Fashion Week by showing up to absolutely everything). Oh, and I can’t forget Eva Longoria Parker looking petite but packing some major bling power. Read more »
