Fashion news: Vivienne Westwood wants to produce plays; Lagerfeld’s Dubai development on hold

Vivienne Westwood wants to produce plays that discuss climate change: “I’m so traumatised by climate change and theatre is somewhere to discuss it…We’re an endangered species and at the end of the century there’s only going to be a million people left and nobody’s doing anything about it. We really face extinction, so there are all kinds of things we need to talk about in theatre.” [Daily Express, via Jezebel]

TIFF red carpet: Right this way for pictures of Ryan Gosling at the Blue Valentine premiere

Of the Ryans floating around at TIFF this year, the vastly superior one (in our humble opinion) is Ryan Gosling, who showed up last night for the Canadian premiere of Blue Valentine. Rumour was that he would skip it, so imagine the relief when he ambled, with his mom, across the red carpet and into the theatre, sweetly greeting the rows of mostly lady fans on his way to his seat. Star power aside, the film had an excitable audience paying full attention as the beautifully real and really flawed relationship between the couple played by Gosling and Michelle Williams—who was particularly affecting—played out across the screen. During the Q&A, Gosling had his aww-inspiring six-year-old co-star Faith Wladyka on his hip, and spurred the entire theatre to sing happy birthday to an audience member who requested a serenade.

That lower-priced Balmain line? Not happening. Never was. Says a company spokesperson: “What I think you might be referring to is a capsule collection that was prepared for some Parisian retailers. Christophe Decarnin wasn’t involved in that project. The brand has decided to not repeat the experience, preferring to concentrate all its efforts on the main line.” [Vogue UK]

Fashion news: Polaroid goes gaga for Gaga, a new prez at Holt Renfrew and Louise Goldin does spiky shoes for Topshop

Matthew Williamson will launch a men’s capsule collection next month. The line, which features tees, cashmere sweaters and silk scarves in the UK designer’s signature prints and vivid colours, will expand to a seasonal collection. [Vogue UK]

Lady Gaga has been named creative director of a specialty line for Polaroid. You may be scratching your head as to why, but just think about the innovation: a camera that adjusts for those wearing an eye patch, or, as our Halifax blogger Nadine suggested, one “that only works when you happen to have forgotten to put on your pants.” [Racked]

Oh, but Jason Wu is also going to be designing cameras, so maybe this is going to turn into a thing. The designer will launch a line of digital point-and-shoots at New York Fashion Week next month. [Styleist] Read more »
