Canadian favourite Joe Fresh is going back to black with their Fall 2013 collection. The look book for fall has just arrived, and it has a pitch perfect mix of basic wardrobe staples and embellished statement items that are certain to revamp your style. The fall collection, which is based on ‘90s Parisian street chic and described by creative director Joe Mimran as “so effortless and cool,” consists mainly of black and white looks. The brand, which is mostly known for their versatile cotton pieces and clean-cut denim, played around with new textures for their fall selection, offering everything from sequined cardigans to faux-fur mini skirts, not to mention a laser-cut sweatshirt or two. Some of the pieces had punk undertones, reminiscent of this year’s Met Gala theme, convincing us that well be seeing a lot more of this edgy style in the months to come.

Taking cues from the Joe Fresh Fall 2013 runway show, which offered countless styling possibilities for the mostly monochrome pieces. Mimran was not the only one sticking to darker shades for his fall collection. From Chanel to Isabel Marant to Alexander Wang, many designers turned down the volume on the colour palettes for the Fall 2013 runway shows. Read more »

When we think punk, we think spikes, studs and leather. Judging from the toughed up Burberry looks on both Cara Delevigne and Sienna Miller at last night’s Met Gala, it seems they both agree. Though others shied away from getting into the evening’s theme PUNK: Chaos to Couture, both it Brits had no problem suiting up in edgy duds.

Sienna Miller donned a simple white crêpe open-back dress topped with a killer studded, cropped, black leather biker jacket worn overtop. To accessorize, she chose a structured Burberry clutch with metal detailing and her Burberry-clad fiancée, Tom Sturridge.

Model of the moment and recently crowned Miss Vogue, Cara Delevigne, rocked a studded crêpe plunge-neck column dress. Delevigne, the current face of Burberry’s beauty campaign and just about every photo spread around, paired the black gown with a white studded clutch and heels, all by Burberry.

Met Gala 2013 Olivia Wilde Katie Holmes

Though some took last night’s Met Gala theme, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, more seriously than others, we must admit we loved seeing celebrities embracing their edgier sides. With black being the more obvious colour of choice, we were surprised when a number of leading ladies opted for white on the red carpet instead. Katie Holmes and Olivia Wilde were among the celebrities who embraced fashion’s most innocent hue.

Katie Holmes and Olivia Wilde both showed their adoration for designer Francisco Costa in choosing gowns from the Calvin Klein Collection. The recently engaged Wilde dazzled in her custom-made white satin bandeau dress with black detailing on the sides, showing off her enviable abs in the midriff-baring style. Topping the look off with minimal jewelry and simple chandelier earrings, smooth hair and Jason Sudeikis on her arm, it was a good look, to say the least.

Met Gala 2013

The build up to this year’s Met Gala has been major. Designers, celebrities and the fashion elite have been scrambling to piece together a look that fits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s theme, PUNK: Chaos to Couture and while admittedly, the punk-inspired looks were few and far between, we were certainly thrilled with a few.

Channeling her own recent V Magazine cover, Miley Cyrus went latter day Debbie Harry with platinum blonde spikes and a long fishnet Marc Jacobs dress. Anne Hathaway debuted a similarly bleached bob alongside her date and dresser for the night, Valentino Garavani, sending the twittersphere in a tizzy.

Co-chairs of the event Riccardo Tisci and Rooney Mara went punk-light with Mara in a beautifully detailed white lace Givenchy dress and a pop of crimson on the lips.

Also wearing Givenchy was none other than Beyoncé—the honourary chairperson for this year’s event. Pairing her custom-designed strapless black and gold printed gown with blinged out boots in the same shade, Queen Bey proved for her second year in a row that last on the red carpet is always best.

After finally receiving the Anna Wintour nod of approval, Kim Kardashian made an appearance at the Met Gala 2013 in a floral-print Givenchy dress with baby-daddy, Kanye West at her side.

Someone who is more known for consistently nailing red carpet looks than Kimye, is Emma Watson and she hit a high note yet again in a skin-bearing Prabal Gurung dress with a single silver drop earring hanging from her left ear.

And while Kristen Stewart has held fast to her role as the face of Balenciaga’s Florabotanica, she strayed from the house’s new wears, opting instead, for a crimson Stella McCartney pantsuit.

So who was the best dressed at the Met Gala 2013? Vote in our poll!

It’s been a couple of months since the last big red carpet event and let’s face it: what is fashion without the red carpet? Since May is just around the corner, this only means the biggest fashion event of the year, the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala in New York. This year’s exhibit, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, will feature around designs for both men and women focusing on the evolution of punk’s influence in the world of fashion since the birth of its movement in the 1970s to its present day.

With punk theme as the focus, who better than to have punk’s latest muse, actress Rooney Mara, and Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci as this year’s co-chairs alongside Anna Wintour and Moda Operandi’s Lauren Santo Domingo? Not usually associated with punk, Beyonce was named Honourary Chair of the event as if her show-stopping Givenchy dress at last year’s MET Gala was not enough of a reason to be given this honour.

Quotable: This model usually does her own hair and makeup (but not for the Met!)

Comments

While we’ve already fawned over the yellow vintage suit Coco Rocha wore to the Met Gala, her pink-tinted curls and bright makeup deserve just as much attention. While the model likes to do her own hair and makeup whenever possible, she rallied a team of professionals for Monday’s event. Rocha told People Magazine: Read more »

All hail McQueen: Last night’s dressed up tributes to the enfant terrible

While the Met’s Savage Beauty exhibit is filled with breathtaking pieces from the late Alexander McQueen, there’s nothing like seeing his creations in motion. While we’d certainly all know this to be true, there was a surprising lack of his dresses on the red carpet, save for a few winning entrances by Sarah Jessica Parker, Karen Elson, Gisele Bündchen and Vogue‘s Hamish Bowles. The inimitable Daphne Guinness didn’t disappoint either, not only dressing in one of the designer’s most fantastical creations, but also giving onlookers a chance to peep her very own collection as she got dressed in Barneys New York‘s store windows. Here, we give you our favourite tribs from last night’s ode to the late and great McQueen.
