A guide to Liberty Ross’s fashion moments »

While our reaction may not have been quite on par with Nutty Madam’s (please do yourself a favor and watch her “HOW COULD YOU DO THIS KRISTEN?!” video), we were definitely all taken by surprise when revelations of Kristen Stewart’s affair with Rupert Sanders, her much older, married-with-two-kids Snow White and the Huntsman director, came to light on Tuesday.

While we’re obviously feeling for poor, beautiful Robert Pattinson during this tumultuous time, it’s Sanders’ wife Liberty Ross who has emerged as the most sympathetic and interesting figure out of the entire debacle. Aside from a bit of cryptic social media usage, the polished Ross has remained completely mum about the whole affair so far, which of course means we’ve had to go digging on her.

A new film opening at Toronto’s Hot Docs this weekend peels back the often-brutal layers of the modeling industry

Comments

With designers like Marc Jacobs hiring 14-year-olds to walk in his shows, and young model Hailey Clauson’s racy photoshoots, the issue of underage models has never been more relevant. Enter Girl Model, the documentary by Ashley Sabin and David Redmon. After premiering at TIFF last year, the film has certainly gotten people talking .

Girl Model explores the dark depths of the underage modeling industry through the eyes of Siberian 13-year-old Nadya Vall who is taken to Tokyo on false pretenses and left to her own devices. And then there’s the disturbingly ambivalent model scout who found her, Ashley Arbaugh, who openly struggles with her feelings on the industry as she scours rural Russia for young girls.

In advance of the film opening at Hot Docs today (through Wednesday), we sat down with Sabin and sage/model Rachel Blais (she provides the most grounded voice in the film) to get their take on the underage modeling industry.

May 2012: Letter from the editor

Bernadette Morra

Models generally don’t like to disclose their age. Sometimes it’s because they don’t want to be perceived as over the hill, other times it’s because they are working the runways sooner than they should be, given that some fashion councils have set a minimum age guideline of 16.

This makes it difficult to tell you who the youngest person in this issue is. But we know for certain who the oldest is: Iris Apfel, at 90, followed by China Machado at 82.

The fact that both of these women have recently appeared in ad campaigns and fashion spreads is wonderfully ironic. Especially since they are modelling not in spite of their advanced age but because of it. The courage to wear their wrinkles with pride has paid off in both reverence and renown. And they cleverly use fashion to ensure they aren’t any less alluring for it.

Not that there is anything wrong with a little tweak here and there, especially if, as Lynn Crosbie writes in “Audio Visual” (page 140), there is a body part you’ve come to detest. Read more »

Influential fashion photographer Paolo Roversi on nudity, the value of a good stylist and why logic has no place in creativity

Paolo Roversi

By Sven Schumann

Staunch fans of fashion photography view Paolo Roversi as a one-man revolution. One of the early adopters of the Polaroid, the Italian-born, Paris-based photographer saw the potential in the camera in the ’70s, years before many of his contemporaries did. Using the Polaroid’s filter and frame to accentuate fashion’s most immediate and delicate moments, Roversi’s style of shooting spawned a legion of admirers, including Carine Roitfeld and the late Herb Ritts. After working under Harper’s Bazaar lensman Laurence Sackman during his salad days, Roversi developed his own POV and began to shoot solo for Elle and Dépêche Mode. His work created such a domino effect in fashion photography that his style became the new industry standard in the ’80s and ’90s. Scrolling through paoloroversi.com offers a taste of his influential commercial campaigns for the houses of Giorgio Armani and Romeo Gigli, as well as his contributions to Paris, British and Italian editions of Vogue. Hot on the heels of launching his most recent book of photographs, Paolo Roversi (Thames & Hudson), the 64-year-old visionary sat down at the Camera Work Gallery in Berlin and spoke to FASHION about his iconic visions—past and present.
