Afternoon beauty fix: Curlers are not just for your grandma

Comments

Every time I attempt to style my hair in an interesting way it backfires—I either look like a prom queen or my hair becomes way too greasy from all the product I use. What can I do differently?
The most covetable styles this year are those with natural movement and a high-calibre shine. Think: big, bouncy curls or a tidy, tight ballerina bun. As for your dilemma, have you ever tried using a set of curlers? We swear they’re not just for your grandma—they actually offer a super easy way to get curls that last and bounce with ease. We love Kevin Murphy Hair Curlers ($36, kevinmurphy.com.au), because they’re riddled with holes for hot air to pass through, meaning the heat from your dryer can mold your hair into waves without the use of much product at all. Begin by spritzing Kérastase Chroma Cristal Shine Perfecting Mist ($42, kerastase.com) onto damp hair—it’s a water-based gel that gives your hair lots of shine. Then, create a centre part, wrap small sections of hair around each curler, and wait until your hair is completely dry. If you’re able to, sleep with them in to set your waves in stone (not literally, of course!) making them super long-lasting. If time’s not on your side, blow your hair dry to speed up the process and follow with a flexi hairspray, like Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray ($24, moroccanoil.com), to keep curls soft and looking radiant, not greasy or wet.

Afternoon beauty fix: Sick of short hair? This healthy mask will help make it longer

Comments

I’ve been wearing my hair short but am now anxious to grow it long enough for a ponytail—is it possible to speed up the growth, or do I need to rely on patience alone?
Some argue that supplements, low stress, a healthy diet, and the warm summer months can speed up hair growth, while others suggest your only hope is to avoid scissors for as long as possible. Having your hair as healthy as possible is your best bet for good growth because it builds your defense against breakage and helps you avoid a dead-end trim or two. Avoid dehydrating shampoos and conditioners (they’re often the really sudsy ones) and invest in a vitamin-enriching treatment, like Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask & Restorative Mask ($37, moroccanoil.com). Using it twice per week will allow for improved texture, more shine, and a higher likelihood of welcoming longer lengths once your short crop finally grows out.

Walking through the oversized doghouse gate in Toronto’s Distillery District, it was clear that the Paws for the Cause gala and fashion show had marked its territory. The second annual doggies-on-the-catwalk event had the city’s cutest pooches sporting Canadian-made coats from Babies & Beasts while their celebrity dog walkers strutted their stuff in darling duds by Philip Sparks. Plaid-on-plaid suits, faux fur–collared jackets and ladylike dresses ensured that models like eTalk’s Tanya Kim and MTV’s Aliya-Jasmine Sovani looked (almost) as cute as their leashed companions.

Hair nectar of the gods

The FASHION copy department is home to a lot of thick, curly, somewhat unruly hair. Siofan Davies (assistant editor/research) possesses a mane of blonde shoulder-length curls, while I (copy and health editor) have tons of long chestnut waves prone to frizz. So we are a fertile testing ground for moisturizing/anti-frizz hair products—beauty editor Lesa Hannah will often lob something new over the partition for us to try. The two of us don’t always have the same hair reactions (she usually blow-dries, I arrive at work damp), but we are in complete agreement about one thing: Moroccanoil ($39, moroccanoil.com) is hair nectar from the gods.
