Disney’s new film Oz The Great and Powerful is opening in movie theatres tomorrow. And not only are we excited to see James Franco in L. Frank Baum’s classic Oz setting, but we also can’t wait to take in the film’s visually stunning fashion and cinematography.

Created by costume designers Gary Jones and Michael Kutsche, the fashion of Oz reflects the glitz and glamour of L. Frank Baum’s classic storybook setting, while frequently using emerald, ahem, Pantone’s Colour of the Year (How perfect!) Jones and Kutsche created almost 2000 costumes for the film, including several elaborate looks for the film’s witchy stars Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, and Rachel Weisz.

Anne Hathaway is keeping her short haircut but hopefully forgetting the rest of her Les Misérables hair and makeup tricks

Comments

There’s just two weeks to go until the big day. Yes, Les Misérables opens in movie theatres on December 25 and to satisfy our fandom till then we’re watching as much promotional footage as we can. Today’s find via Styleite: a behind-the-scenes look at the hair and makeup that was used to transform the actors on screen.

Lisa Westcott, the hair and makeup artist for Les Misérables said, “How can you make a beautiful woman not look beautiful?” when speaking about turning Anne Hathaway into the character of Fantine, a struggling factory worker who is forced into prostitution in 19th century France.

The video offers an interesting insight: while many thought Hathaway was forced to cut her hair, she was actually the one who decided to chop it all off for the role. While she’s said that the shorter style is one she’s grown to love, the rest of her Les Misérables look won’t be sticking around: “A lot of people had to wear wear plastic moulds on top of their teeth that were painted,” Anne Hathaway explained of her character’s missing and decayed teeth. “I was one of the lucky ones. I didn’t have to wear it, I just had to have my teeth painted.” Read more »

And leave it to Marc Jacobs to create a high fashion version of the swappable and coveted Silly Bandz that all spell out his name—a fun and new take of the popular rubber accessory. And when you’re young, the $16 price tag means nothing, but the designer name says it all.

MEN’S FASHION COVER STORY: Michael Shannon, one of Hollywood’s most startling actors, moves into the big time with three new movies

Acts of devotion: Michael Shannon is seriously dedicated to the art of acting.

There’s something in Michael Shannon’s eyes that puts people on edge. Klaus Kinski had it. Christopher Walken has it, too. There’s a wildness there, a quality we’re quick to associate with madness. But that association is limiting, even if it’s true that these actors excel at playing men who’ve come unhinged, like the troubled neighbour in Revolutionary Road, a role that earned Shannon his first Oscar nomination, or Nelson Van Alden, the principled but ever more compromised lawman he plays on HBO’s Prohibition-era mob drama Boardwalk Empire.

The look is suggestive of deep-seated emotion that cannot be controlled or concealed, no matter how hard we try to keep it from the surface. If the eyes are really any kind of window to the soul, this is the force that threatens to shatter the glass. Yet that force has served the 38-year-old actor well, becoming a feature as distinguishing as his six-foot-three frame, his youthful face and a voice that would’ve suited a fire-and-brimstone Southern preacher.

According to British Vogue, actress Adelaide Clemens—who plays Myrtle’s sister in the film—spilled the beans earlier this week and also hinted that Prince may be contributing to the soundtrack. While nothing has been confirmed by Lady Gaga or the the producers of the film, we started thinking of how she could rework some of her existing songs for the film:
