See how we painted our nails! »
Welcome to the Nail Corner—a new feature that will show off creative manicures found on the hands of FASHION’s editors, interns, and stylish staff members. While there’s a lot to be said about the talents of our favourite professionals, some of us prefer to skip the salon and go DIY. We’ll teach you a few tricks of the at-home trade and show off the best new shades. Like what you see, have questions, or want to share your own manicure? Hit us up on Facebook or Twitter. See all the Le Mindu Minx designs »
Famous for creating wigged-out costumes for Lady Gaga, designer and hairstylist Charlie Le Mindu often makes headlines for extremely avant-garde runway shows. (Think: nude models painted with wisps of hair.) So it came as no surprise when Le Mindu partnered with Minx for Spring 2012, delivering a collection of outfits and hairpieces constructed exclusively from more than 25,000 nail decals—in custom patterns, of course. Snooki
It’s a trend we’ve been trying to ignore for a while, but Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi keeps trying to make it happen—the duckbill nail. Dubbed as such because of the way the nail gets wider at the ends, it takes a long afternoon at the salon to achieve this extremely fake nail look. Seen as recently as yesterday, at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, we’re hoping the duckbill trend doesn’t have wings and will stay in the Jersey Shore forever. But red carpet after red carpet (who, exactly, keeps inviting her?) Snooki is there, showing off her bedazzled, duckbill’d tips. There are about a thousand adjectives to describe why we hate this look, with “artificial” and “acrylic” topping the list. Actually, we’d maybe even like the airbrushed art she’s wearing (in a Katy Perry sort of way) if it was paired with a more naturally shaped nail.

What is going on here? Is that She-Ra? Photo via zimbio.com
Yesterday, while we were humming and hawing over whether or not to wear cement-coloured polish, the Tokyo Nail Expo was showing off mind-blowingly intricate nail design–3D Hello Kitty, lace, diamonds, giant rosettes and what appears to be She-Ra. The annual nail extravaganza also includes the Japanese-celeb laden Nail Queen Awards, which appears to be a cross between a beauty pageant and the Contessas. [Zimbio]

We almost passed over this photo of Amber Heard at the premiere of The Joneses. (See our red carpet gallery) She does look flawless in her matte red lips and black satin dress. Classic, but no big deal. And then we had a scroll down moment. Check out the close up: Read more »

The new crop of matte nail polishes has been causing controversy on the nail polish blogs in a way you never imagined a nail polish could. Some like it, most are dubious, but almost every one of them has tried it. Orly, Zoya and OPI all have matte collections for fall. We grabbed a few bottles of OPI’s effort—six popular shades recreated in a flat finish—and got painting. Read more »
