It took less than a split second for me to fall in love with the manicures at Rachel Antonoff’s Fall 2012 presentation. CND tweeted a close-up of the design—which was created to mimic the printed flowers found throughout the collection—and I was hooked. It looks like a cross between a hibiscus and a lotus: wide petals that extend up from the moon of your nail and into a bright-red background. And once you sort out what colours to use it’s an extremely fun design to paint.

There’s nothing better than a holiday to inspire a great manicure—and for us, Valentine’s Day sits at the top of the list. After all, pink and red are the most popular polish colours available. At some point this week it actually snowed in Toronto—huge fluffy flakes!—and the snow globe-like atmosphere instantly became Nail Corner inspiration. I’ve been dreaming of opaque white glitter for a few months now, but after going down a rabbit hole of searching for such a polish, it seems it’s a mix that’s nearly impossible to acquire. So nail art, paired with two of my all-time-favourite glitters, seemed like an appropriate substitute. (For now, that is!)

Ah, the French manicure. Is there a beauty technique that’s more divisive? While there’s no denying that when done well and in moderation it’s a flattering look, its reputation has been tarnished by aggressive acrylics and—shudder—the growing popularity of French pedicures. So bring on the reinvention! This week we’re exploring new approaches to painting the tips of your nails. By changing up the colour and the shape, you’ll still achieve the optical illusion of longer nails—without the dated look of a conventional French mani.

Yes, technically a quatrefoil is a four-lobed shape—picture the Gothic clovers seen in Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery—and there are only three scalloped lobes in this nail design. However, it still evokes the shapes and lines of a repeating quatrefoil pattern (like you would see in latticework or on wallpaper) and besides, artistic liberties are wonderful things! By painting the quatrefoil design on top of a metallic polish, it gives this manicure a great deal of depth, as well as a sparkly finish. And maybe it also looks like clouds?

It’s best to ease your way out of the holidays. After a week of eating nothing but comfort food, being hustled between endless family gatherings and feeling very squeezed in at Boxing Week sales, we could all use a mini-vacation before heading back to work. However, considering most of us are already back at our desks, it’s time to find relaxation in other ways, such as lavender. As a plant, lavender is known for its calming, restorative properties. So why not transfer a little bit of that relaxation onto your nails with a soothing lavender ombré manicure?
