From Charlize Theron‘s feminine froth, to Reese Witherspoon‘s red hot, to Rooney Mara‘s black-on-black, last night’s red carpet at the 2012 Golden Globes was certainly a kaleidoscopic feast for the eyes. (A feast that will usher in countless trends, to be sure.) Amidst all the showstopping beauty, who came out on top? To help narrow it down, we’ve got the trends down to an ombré effect. Dior has signed Mila Kunis as the newest face of its Miss Dior handbags. The campaign, shot by Mikael Jansson, features a very Parisian-chic Kunis in black clothes and a chignon. (But of course.)
The advertisements are set to debut in international editions of Elle, Vogue, and Madame Figaro by January 15, reaching the American monthlies after January 29.
This will be Kunis’ first major ad campaign since she wowed audiences with her stellar performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. And the casting for the ad is an interesting one, if you remember Dior’s scrape with anti-semiticism last year. Kunis’ Black Swan co-star, Natalie Portman, also represents the brand, but threatened to leave the fashion house last March following Galliano’s anti-semitic comments. Despite Galliano’s outbursts, it seems that Dior has a soft spot for Jewish actress-ballerinas.
Perhaps this was Dior’s way of definitively stating that they do not share Galliano’s beliefs. Then again, Kunis was one of the most bankable cover stars of 2011, gracing Cosmopolitan, Elle, GQ, and W mags.
Delphine Arnault, deputy general manager of Dior, told WWD that Kunis’ print campaign would be part of a larger “worldwide media plan.” Does this mean a quirky fashion video of Kunis is in our future? We sure hope so.

As is the case with virtually any news story these days, the developments in the John Galliano story⎯the designer being accused of hurling anti-Semitic insults at an (incidentally non-Jewish) couple while drinking at the Paris café, Le Perle⎯can be measured in tweets, quotes and snippets. Given the proliferated speed at which these bits are published and publicized, it’s amazing to witness how quickly the industry’s reaction has gone from appalled to forgiving to looking forward to the designer’s imminent replacement at Dior. Given the industry’s propensity for forgetfulness⎯history has made fools of those who once condemned Coco Chanel for her involvement with the Nazis or Kate Moss for being caught with cocaine⎯we have no doubt that Galliano will be back at the top in no time. All references to the frankly horrifying severity of his remarks will vanish and whereas Chanel’s and Moss’s actions took years to do the same, Galliano’s have almost done so in a matter of 14 days. Meanwhile, as rumours swirl for a possible replacement by Riccardo Tisci, Alber Elbaz and Marc Jacobs, we take a look back at the quickest judgment turnarounds in fashion history.

WWD is reporting that Christian Dior has officially fired designer, John Galliano. In a statement released by the house, Sidney Toledano, Dior’s president and chief officer firmly condemned Galliano’s behaviour, stating that his comments were in direct opposition to their core values. Despite the recent developments, the house plans to go on with its fall 2011 show slated for this Friday.
Meanwhile, Natalie Portman, the most recent face of Dior Parfums has disassociated herself from the designer, stating, “As an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”
