The Toronto International Film Festival opened last night with a decidedly Canadian theme. The gala screening was for Score: A Hockey Musical, so a fully Canuck band of celebs were in attendance–George Strombolopolous, who played a hockey announcer, Nelly Furtado, who yelled from the stands as a streak-haired puck bunny and Walter Gretzky, who played himself in a vision. Aussie Olivia Newton-John plays a hockey mom in the film, and made an appearance at the premiere, as did young stars Noah Reid and Allie MacDonald (styled by our own Caitlan Moneta), who was wearing a navy Greta Constantine frock, Aldo shoes and a mega-carat necklace of raw Ontario diamonds from Birks. (The clutch isn’t Canadian–it’s by New York designer Ted Rossi, but the studs make it okay.)

Dean and Dan Caten, Toronto natives, ready-t0-wear designers and Olympic torch runners, also had a hand in last night’s opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Games. The pair designed the looks for all the celeb performers (save Ashley MacIsaac and K.D. Lang). The high point was certainly opera star Measha Brueggergosman, who sang the Olympic hymn in a full-length shimmering golden gown which, combined with her elevated position, gave Brueggergosman the appearance of performing on Mount Olympus. If opinions are split on the arrangement of “O Canada” sung by last night by Montreal singer Nikki Yanofsky, at least we can all agree that her origami fold cocktail dress was cute. Garou’s astrakhan-trimmed jacket looked sharp, as did Bryan Adams in a suit fitted within an inch of its life–no comment on the duet with Nelly Furtado. It must be said, though, that fiddler Ashley MacIsaac was really the best-dressed man of the night, tearing through in a sleeveless biker vest and kilt.

Discretely tucked above a Queen Street West shop, Canada’s Red Bull offices held an intimate concert by larger-than-life performers Fritz Helder & The Phantoms. The crowd toasted the weekend and waited for the Toronto outfit to take the stage, taking in designs from Greta Constantine, Jeremy Laing, Nada, Oligarchy, Pink Cobra, Evan Biddell, Label, Franke for Chasse Gardée, Jaime Galindo and Hoi Bo, all of which were to be auctioned off to benefit Fashion Cares and ACT (AIDS Committee of Toronto).
