Milan: Dolce & Gabbana get nostalgic for fall

DOLCE & GABBANA Fall 2010. Photography by Peter Stigter

Dolce & Gabbana scored with the most powerfully emotional show of the week. The entire audience was completely verklempt and near tears–from the swell of the soundtrack (Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman’s romantic duet in Moulin Rouge) to the beautifully-shot black and white slo-mo  film that paid homage to the craftsmanship of the atelier.

The show tugged at our heartstrings, as hit after hit from the duo’s repertoire appeared: Sicilian widows, lingerie and corsetry, phenomenal tailored jackets, leopard and lace…. Stefano and Domenico showed nostalgia for the past in a thouroughly modern way. Just divine!

Nostalgia alert: Club Monaco brings back the crest sweatshirt

Back in the day, logo sweatshirts ruled. Beaver Canoe, Coconut Joe, et al. were de rigueur at my London, Ontario elementary school and the brand you wore determined your social status. By the time I hit high school, top spot in the caf had gone to Club Monaco and their crest-emblazoned sweatshirt. Gone from store shelves for over a decade, this classic piece of collegiate wear has returned a Club near you. (If near you means Toronto Eaton Centre, Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Robson Street or Pacific Centre in Vancouver or Eaton Metrotown in Burnaby.) If nostalgia can be bought, then $79 for the crew neck sweatshirt–the tee goes for $29, the hoodie is $89–is as safe a bet as any to relive your youth.

They say if you lived through a trend the first time, don’t do catch on the second round. That’s probably true, but despite attending high school in prime neon years, I’ve developed a bit of the fashion victim’s addiction to this season’s sporty incarnation. Read more »

Winnipeg: Snake eyes on a Sunday afternoon

Gaudy jewelry. Dusty books. Dainty china. Pins and buckles. Ancient technology. Tarnished silver… My Little Pony!  There is really nothing quite like the smell of nostalgia.  Sundays have historically been my day of rest, but after a little encouragement from a friend and a stiff cup of joe, I found a new way to spend my lazy afternoon: digging through rusted old memories at the Mulvey Market (1A 421 Mulvey Ave. E., 204-478-1217). How do you feel about high tops?

I’ve been staring at this photo of the new KangaRoos bright-white-and-neon Skywalkers ($85, kangaroos.com) for the last two weeks and I’m torn. I really don’t know how I feel about them.

Toronto: A specialty in vintage shades

Nothing says winter blues combat like a flashy pair of shades. At Ontario Specialty Co (133 Church St., 416-366-9327), you’ll find one of my favorite selections of vintage sunglasses in every possible color and style.

But don’t just take my word for it: fans of the shop include the likes of Alice Cooper, The Clash, Sean Lennon, Beck, Alec Baldwin and Danny Masterson (a.k.a. Hyde from That ’70s Show), who bought 48 pairs.

Dunnuh dunnuh. Dunnuh dunnuh.

It’s no secret among those who know me well how much I love 90210, old school style. I’m even the proud owner of a Dylan doll and heart-shaped pillow (shut up). So when word came out last fall that they were introducing a new version of 90210, I balked at the seemingly blasphemous idea.
