OSCAR DE LA RENTA Fall 2010. Photography by Peter Stigter

With all of the sombre dark colours on the fall runways, Mr. de la Renta decided to brighten things up on the Upper East Side. Cinnamon alpaca coats, magenta-printed silk chiffon dresses, pumpkin leather belts and emerald duchesse satin halter gowns injected some much needed colour into the noir trend that has been repeatedly played out on the runways during New York fashion week. TIFF 2009

Watch this space: The TIFF red carpet is coming

Reason we want to be in New York tonight: Oscar de la Renta will be singing a duet with Barbara Walters at Saks tonight as part of Fashion’s Night Out.

Reason we’re pretty thrilled to be in Toronto: The Toronto International Film Festival. We were at the Hazelton Hotel this morning to watch the agents and PRs descend into the lobby wielding BlackBerrys, sunglasses and stress. Starting tomorrow, we’ll have coverage of the red carpet, plus styling videos, daily polls and party coverage. Our friends over at Toronto Life are already in full TIFF mode, so check in with them to find out where the Jonas Brothers went shopping and what Isabella Rossellini got up to with some paper fish.

You mean that gravity defying lean was an illusion? Michael Jackson’s legacy includes patented anti-gravity shoes, which hooked into the stage, allowing him to lean forward without falling over. [UnBeige]

Oscar de la Renta has released a limited edition line of the world’s most adorable floral dresses–for little girls. The designer is donating $100 per dress to the Children’s Defense Fund, which makes the $220 to $330 price tags a bit easier to swallow. [W] Read the rest of this entry »

Knowing not a word of Spanish, I assumed the gilded words “El Hangar” on the Mango gala invite meant the whole glittering shindig would go down in a Barcelona airport hangar.

Not quite: the location of the Oscar party (that would be the jury chairman and too-charming host of this year’s El Botón-Mango Fashion Awards, Oscar de la Renta, not the little gold man) was in Mango’s BCN headquarters. To fete the second incarnation of the awards, the warehouse was transformed into an amber-lit hive of fast-fashion festivity, all champers and ciggies and swift kisses on both cheeks. The international jet set was in full force, so in that respect it was a sort of hangar, after all (and never mind all the overbronzed hangers-on).

How did my Thursday begin?  With substance and a touch of glamour at Michael Kors. Think neo-classics, sculptural details, lean trousers, graphic bareness and lots of golden camel and olive green. (And of course, black—the go-to shade for the chic elite.)
