Alexander McQueen Fall 2013

Photography by Peter Stigter

Paris reigns everlasting as the monarch of style, elegance and tradition, but she also ranks high for innovation and sartorial experimentation. Because of this rare gift, the City of Light continues to be a magnet for a motley crew of bloggers, eccentric journalists and international admirers (oft times known as shoppers) who make the fashion pilgrimage twice a year to bask in her glow. Designers at the top of their game have dazzled us once again. After Chanel’s global statement, Jean Paul Gaultier’s punk parade and Alexander Wang’s debut at Balenciaga, here are three of our most magical moments from Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013.

Fur was everywhere at Paris Fashion Week for Fall 2013. The French translation, la fourrure, features a purring intervocalic R; it’s almost a meow. At one show, four editors in a row, each wearing a mammoth animal coat, resulted in an awkwardly comical seating arrangement. We also noticed that fur didn’t just mean coats; we saw it as pocket detailing, handbags, collars and evening gown trim. And the good news, if you’ve made that hair-raising investment, is that fur will be back in full swing for Fall 2013 and into winter.

Here are our fabulous fur picks:

Fall 2013 is on the agenda, but here at Paris Fashion Week, spring is in the air. It’s been deliciously sunny over the past few days with fashion warriors shedding winter for bright spring outfits. If Carine Roitfeld can do head-to-toe cream and caramel, bare legs and open-toe shoes (as seen at Hôtel de Crillon), then the rest of us can too. Black, however, is still a dominant hue on the catwalk and the sidewalk, but every now and again a flash of brightness taps you on the shoulder and says, “regarde-moi.”

Here are Paris Fashion Week’s top four colour moments for Fall 2013.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013 backstage beauty: Shimmering, glitter-covered eyes at Chanel

Chanel Fall 2013 backstage beauty sequin eyes

Photography by Peter Stigter

There was plenty to take in at the Chanel Fall 2013 show this morning at the Grand Palais, not to mention the giant globe centered in the middle of the runway. While everywhere you looked was an extravagant feast for the eye, our gaze was fixed upon the sequins adorning the models’ twinkling eyes.

Dramatic and artistic makeup is not new for Chanel (remember the leaf-like tulle appliqués on the eyes for the Spring 2013 Couture show?) and this spectacle stayed true to showing an innovative look. The focus on the models was a perfectly bedazzled eye, creating just enough glitter to balance the wearable with the over-the-top. What appeared to be tiny silver sequins adorned eyelids starting at the lash line and working out into a slight wing shape. Some were also glued onto the tops of the lashes for an added shimmering effect. A thin black line was penciled in under the lower lash line for definition and to give balance to the eye. The rest of the face was suitably bare, with sheer natural skin, a lightly defined brow and a light berry shade staining the lips. Read more »

Chanel Fall 2013 Ready to Wear

The Grand Palais in Paris was the centre of the universe, at least for five minutes this morning. Chanel‘s lustful Fall 2013 prêt-à-porter show staged a giant rotating globe in the main hall, which was illuminated by a rare sunny sky, gently bathing the atrium roof in a light mellow glow. The globe, as it turned, showcased little Chanel flags indicating the iconic brand’s international reach. The Chanel soundtrack began with classical music that eventually tripped into a hip hop number with the lyrics “Around the world” pulsing over and over again.

And then the clothes! All the expected ingredients were there: suits, chain purses and double C logos. The tweed jackets this season were cut lower on the hip, in many cases with a hem of mini-pleats. Some ensembles shimmered with metallic accents, while others popped in bubblegum pink. Newer silhouettes included the roomier, ubiquitous coat body with dropped sleeves, matched with a fuller ruffle miniskirt, as well as balloon sleeves that tightened at the forearm like gloves. For a playful addition, patent thigh-high leggings (in black and white) coordinated with matching boots adorned with chains. Also, several models sported furry helmets in cobalt, mint and pastel pink for a look that resembled a kooky version of Lego hair.

Makeup inspiration at Isabel Marant Fall 2013:
“I wanted to create a makeup look that was both feminist and boyish. The focus is on the brows, which are effortless but controlled—full, with volume, almost masculine. Makeup on the face is very light, very sheer, like a veil, while the lips are simple, natural and nude.” – Tom Pecheux, creative makeup director for Estée Lauder

Get the look:
- Models’ faces were prepped with a cocktail of anti-aging serums and creams, including Estée Lauder Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging Crème and Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex. These helped to smooth out the surface of the skin and added a much-needed dose of hydration. Skin was then kept fresh and clean with just a sheer layer of Estée Lauder foundation and concealer where needed. Read more »

Sensory overload! From the wispy feathers at Dries Van Noten to the rock ‘n’ roll studded mini-wrap skirt at Isabel Marant, Paris Fashion Week is an adrenalin-charged sartorial dream. (Seeing Catherine Deneuve munching on popcorn at Lanvin was très surreal.) Ping-ponging from one sensational venue to the next—Palais de Tokyo to Grand Palais to Jardin des Tuileries—is a test of endurance and high-heeled ankle strength. Now at its halfway point, this marathon de la mode has unraveled several key trends. One in particular: I’m seeing much runway love for slouchy XL tailoring. It’s a woman’s world, in a man’s coat. 8 designers (and counting) have rocked relaxed dropped shoulders with wide wrap-me-up lapels and massive boxy silhouettes. Got a little bit of room to spare under that woolen cover-up? All the better for layering winter’s equally large and cozy knits.
