Dispatches from Paris: Brocade at Balmain, colour blocking at Balenciaga and sequinned booties at Barbara Bui

Parisians sure take their fashion trends seriously. Everyone here–from babies to grannies–is wearing Breton stripes, even though it’s still parka weather. The catwalks, meanwhile, are taking a walk on the wilder side for fall 2010.  As of day three, the rich rocker chic dominates as the new icon of Parisian style. There were velvet brocade frock coats (think Mick Jagger) and mini-dresses embellished with gold chains at Balmain, croc leggings and booties embroidered over and over again with metallic sequins and fringe at Barbara Bui (see the video above). An emerging trend: colour blocking and patchwork, both dark and moody, or sweetly sci-fi as at Balenciaga.

Amber Rose dresses like a speed-skating statuette at Chanel Haute Couture. Do you like her outfit?

Kanye West paramour Amber Rose is not known for dressing conservatively and indeed, her parade of Men’s/Couture Week outfits have been designed to very specifically not blend in. There was the head-to-toe fur at Louis Vuitton’s men’s show, a furry LV muff at the Dior Homme show that inspired many a “muff diving” reference, and at yesterday’s Kris Van Assche show, a knit dress so cut-away, it would make Mark Fast blush. While some of Rose’s looks are head-scratching, we can always appreciate someone who can do over-the-top (really over-the-top) looks.

At yesterday’s Chanel Haute Couture show, Rose donned a full-length golden hooded body stocking dress that hits somewhere between speed skater and awards-show statuette. Do you like her look?

Parting kisses: Favourite things from Paris

Show: Alexander McQueen—and I wasn’t even present. Too sick that night to crawl from bed, I—and thousands upon thousands of other obsessives—watched McQ’s first live-to-air catwalk on ShowStudio.com. Even from afar, I was spun in, so totally entranced by his entire underworld of alien warrior princesses. (And those shoes! The most wondrously physics-defying footwear since Theyskens’ heelless hooves for Nina Ricci. Which was just last season…but still.) Magnificent in scope, meticulous in execution, it was a show to write home about. Unless you were already there. Read the rest of this entry »

Paris street style: No slouch

oct09parislovelies20sm.jpg

Loose-fitting trousers definitely fit into the category of “tricky trends”–it’s rare the soul who can make a true drop crotch work–but this Lovely’s slightly structured slouch looks breezy, not try-hard.

Paris street style: Chasing waterfalls

oct09parislovelies18sm.jpg Hanneli again! We’re breaking with our no-black-leather policy on the Paris street fashion shots because we love her silver waterfall necklace the silver waterfall on her Rad Hourani dress.

Also: Check out the studs on the bottom of her bag–do not mess with her.

Paris street style: Oh BryanBoy

oct09parislovelies17sm Here’s BryanBoy–that’s Monsieur Bryan Boy to you, as per his calligraphied LV invite. The thrilla from Manila has been wearing Rad Hourani around this town all week, and looking–his word–fabu. After the Vuitton show, we talked about how cool Canadians are right now: Rad, Mark Fast, Jeremy Laing.. “What’s in your water?” he demanded to know. Well, we have some of the cleanest tap water in the world, so not a lot. Maybe it’s in our beer?

Hot Disc: Air’s Love 2

oct09hotdiscair

Among the dubious charms of the Paris Metro is this recurring phenomenon: a grubby, often bereted man gets on, wielding an accordion, which he plays energetically for at least five minutes. This surprise isn’t free, of course; afterward he’ll stick out his hand for coins. If I were a nicer Canadian, I’d find this delightful. But I’m like: Hi! Can’t you see I’m trying to listen to Air?

Because the French pop princes have finally set free their latest effort, Love 2 (EMI), and it seems just the thing to listen to on steamy subterranean rides. Read the rest of this entry »
