Last night the Metro Toronto Convention Centre was brimming with the who’s who of Canada’s design scene, there for the opening night party of the country’s largest contemporary design fair, the Interior Design Show. Dashing gents, like fashion designer Philip Sparks and veteran FASHION photographer George Whiteside, and sophisticated design ladies—Sarah Richardson, Dee Dee Taylor Hannah (in Christopher Kane, no less), Love It or List It’s Hilary Farr—sipped flutes of Veuve and paraded along the rows upon rows of out-of-this-world design.

Danier continues its collaboration series for spring with Philip Sparks and and George Antonopoulos

Comments

Two looks from the OBJECT by George Antonopoulos Fall 2011 collection.

The snow hasn’t even started falling yet and the news of Danier’s new Canadian designer collaborations for Spring 2012 has us wishing for warmer temperatures. Philip Sparks will add his vintage-inspired aesthetic to an accessory line for men that will include backpacks and iPad cases in addition to classic carryalls (but who says us girls can’t get in on the action?) For women, following the success of the fall collaboration, OBJECT by George Antonopoulos will return for spring with a bright modern mod collection including colour blocking and pastels, as well as an expanded accessory selection. Both collections will be sure to sell out fast. We know where we’ll be headed when we’re looking to update our wardrobes this spring.

Walking through the oversized doghouse gate in Toronto’s Distillery District, it was clear that the Paws for the Cause gala and fashion show had marked its territory. The second annual doggies-on-the-catwalk event had the city’s cutest pooches sporting Canadian-made coats from Babies & Beasts while their celebrity dog walkers strutted their stuff in darling duds by Philip Sparks. Plaid-on-plaid suits, faux fur–collared jackets and ladylike dresses ensured that models like eTalk’s Tanya Kim and MTV’s Aliya-Jasmine Sovani looked (almost) as cute as their leashed companions.

For the past eight years, Canada’s top designers have joined forces with Cashmere Bathroom Tissue to put together what may very well be the most unique fashion show on the planet: the White Cashmere Collection. Presented this past Wednesday at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario, the Collection of bathroom-tissue outfits supports the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, heralds the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and boggles the mind (how is that made out of toilet paper?!).

Phillip Sparks Fall 2011

Photography by Jenna Wakani

Philip Sparks kicked off the fall 2011 season in Toronto last night with the latest in a line of consistently refined collections. Stage strewn with antique toboggans, rackets and boxes with a backdrop of oversized woven deer quilts by artist Grant Heap, it’s no surprise that the designer drew yet again from the idyllic Canadian winter, a setting that has become his inspiration of choice.

Playing on his signature of mix-and-match prep, the combo line—including his sophomore outing for the ladies—was made up of his classic wool and tweed suits, Melton duffle coats and canvas parkas and nipped-waisted tailored dresses featured oversized checks and were adorned with curly shearing. A warm and watery maple leaf print made its way onto a shirtdress, pleated skirt and a capped sleeve blouse, bringing a bit of an artful quality to the mix. Close to the end of the collection, a Janelle Monae lookalike appeared in a cropped black tux with purple lapels and spectator oxfords to boot. Always the first out of the fashion week gate, Sparks’s is a collection so full of delicious details it requires multiple sets of fresh eyes. Here’s to enjoying the rest of the season with peepers similarly peeled.
