Shop watch: Ukamaku, online purveyor of Canadian fashion designs

Comments

Nella Bella designer Tarek Al-Azbat at the Ukamaku media preview and website launch.

Designer labels like Prada, Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana roll easily off the tongues of the average Canadian fashion enthusiast but less so names like Breeyn McCarney, Zoran Dobric, Heidi Ackerman and Nella Bella. Toronto-based online store and community Ukamaku (ukamaku.com) hopes to change that. Read more »

Vancouver: Lily & Jae pops up at One of a Few tomorrow

Comments

One of the first designers I interviewed about five years ago was Jude Feller, the mastermind behind Lily & Jae (lilyandjae.com). A background in film and TV costuming meant superb technical skills and the brand was soon worn by the likes of intelligent, gorgeous Canadian actress Sarah Polley, who described it oh-so-many years ago as “perfect for the tomboy flirting with the idea of being girly.” Read more »

Vancouver: A Perse pop-up on South Granville

Comments

Now that the party’s over and Vancouver has returned to its calm, laid-back self (of course, there are still plenty of Paralympics festivities), I’m craving some serious R&R. Never a better time, then, to stop by the James Perse pop-up (2717 Granville St., 604-736-4766, jamesperse.com), which opened before the Olympics and is sticking around the South Granville strip indefinitely. The California–based label is known for its quality basics and so-comfortable-you’ll-never-want-to-change loungewear, which are available alongside bedding and books at the store—the company’s second location in Canada.

Browsing the Holt Renfrew holiday pop-up

dec09holtsFC4_lg

The Holts pop-up transformed the Fashion House condos location (560 King St. W., Toronto) into a holiday boutique filled with luxe, well-edited picks from Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Alexander Wang et al. Though the merch was heavy on winter (Sorel boots and house brand Cowichans, loads of flannel, and stocking stuffers like Dandi Maestre bracelets and Butter London nail polish), the atmosphere was stifling hot in the window-encased sunroom. (We’re hoping a much-needed fan will be in place by tomorrow.) Jurlique creams, sparkly Hanky Panky lingerie gift sets and colourful Theory sweaters were among the more feminine picks, though much of VP of fashion direction Barbara Atkin’s curated selection could be worn by men and women. (We especially liked the Christopher Sherman bow ties and classic Canada Goose parkas). The merch will be replenished daily until the shop closes on December 6–just follow the hot pink Holts truck.

The hours: Tonight till 7 p.m., Thursday 2 to 9 p.m., Friday 12 to 8 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 12 to 6 p.m. Click the images below to see a gallery of the shop.

Holts to pop up on King West

Holt Renfrew (holtrenfrew.com) will be opening its first ever pop-up shop next week. The Fashion House condo development 560 King Street West will be open from December 2 to 6. (The development is definitely making friends with Canadian fashion, allowing Jeremy Laing, Greta Constantine, Mikhael Kale and 8 other designers to put their stamp on the building’s common areas.) The Holts pop-up will have a unisex theme, with their VP of fashion direction, Barbara Atkin, curating a selection of clothing that aims to blur “the lines between male and female dressing.
