They said/We said: Toronto fashion week to celebrate 25th year with a new location and shows by Joeffer Caoc, Cynthia Rowley, and more!

The Spring 2012 collections, taking place October 17–21, will mark the 25th Toronto fashion week. Having previously announced the location of the new venue, the Fashion Design Council of Canada has now released the schedule and details about the week.

While we’re not sure what to expect with the week’s theme of “CanadaCool,” we’re excited about the new venue, David Pecaut Square. With the new venue being downtown, we no longer have to teeter down to the exhibition in four-inch heels.

Each season showcases Canada’s design talent and Spring 2012 is no different, with collections from fashion heavyweights Joeffer Caoc, Pink Tartan, Denis Gagnon, and the new and exciting Amanda Lew Kee and Chloe Comme Parris. This season is also going international with established American designer Cynthia Rowley showing three never-before-seen looks.

With a new name and venue, we hope that the collections from Canadian designers are equally as fresh and thrilling.

As we reported back in early June, Mercedes-Benz and IMG have introduced Start Up, their internationally lauded joint competition and mentorship program for up-and-coming designers to Canada. Well, here we go!

Early Wednesday, the first Start Up step was put into place, as I—along with a slew of notables including designer Marie Saint Pierre and FDCC president Robin Kay—judged the Montreal semi-final applicants. As a fan and avid supporter of Canadian fashion, I was thrilled to be a guest judge. Especially since FASHION Magazine is the official magazine sponsor!

Toronto’s LG Fashion Week has found a new home. After living in tents at Nathan Phillips Square (a few short blocks from our office), then last season at King and Shaw, the show is moving to an indoor spot with 40-foot ceilings in nearby Liberty Village. FDCC prez Robin Kay told The Toronto Star that the runway will be inside the building, which will also have a tent erected outside.

The FDCC has also released a roughed in schedule with a start date of Sunday, March 28. (The shows close Thursday, April 1.) Read more »

Hot on the heels of LG Fashion Week comes the news that Fashion Design Council of Canada president Robin Kay is selling her house in Toronto’s Parkdale neighborhood. For the $599,000 price tag (though it will fetch more, for sure) you get five bedrooms, two bathrooms, new appliances, a geisha lamp and a walk-in closet filled with Canadian fashion. oct09readsmatisLucian Matis has been named the winner of the first FDCC Designer Development Fund award. The fund will be awarded annually in support of Canadian fashion designers who demonstrate potential for growth. A business mentorship with FDCC prez Robin Kay is part of the prize. “We want to extend the potential to build their brand and assist the designers with the necessary tools to help them emerge nationally and internationally in this new economy,” says Kay. This week’s New York Magazine has named Anna Wintour one of the 12 most powerful New Yorkers. This news didn’t come as too shocking, but more confusing is the fact that the Vogue powerhouse is the sole woman to make the list. [The Cut]

When our own Jordan Porter showed up for the first day of Toronto Fashion Week sporting pearls attached to a vintage brooch and an oversized blush pink rose, we all attacked in our usual way: “OMG your necklace!” and “Where did you get that?”

“It’s Maryam’s.”

Maryam being Maryam Keyhani, one-time FASHION intern and designer of some of the most beautiful neckwear we’ve come across in a long while. One of her unapologetically girly pieces has already been spotted this week adorning the neck of FDCC president Robin Kay at the Holt Renfrew Media Cocktail.

L’Oreal Fashion Week: Insider report

Comments

This morning I was scheduled to do a CBC NewsWorld interview at 7 a.m. to discuss the launch of L’Oreal Fashion Week in Toronto. After travelling to fashion weeks around the globe I thought long and hard about what truly defines Toronto’s fashion week and how we differ from the other fashion capitals.
