Nail Corner: Brighten up a cloudy winter day with this snow globe manicure

Comments

At some point this week it actually snowed in Toronto—huge fluffy flakes!—and the snow globe-like atmosphere instantly became Nail Corner inspiration. I’ve been dreaming of opaque white glitter for a few months now, but after going down a rabbit hole of searching for such a polish, it seems it’s a mix that’s nearly impossible to acquire. So nail art, paired with two of my all-time-favourite glitters, seemed like an appropriate substitute. (For now, that is!)

Nail Corner: Using manicure guides to create nail art and a birthday bonus—the cupcake mani!

Comments

This week on Nail Corner, we feature two designs that make clever use of manicure guide stickers—a half-moon mani and a tone-on-tone diagonal stripe. Both are even easier to do in person than they look. Plus, for those with a steady hand and playful mind, we present a festive birthday cupcake manicure. Like what you see? Nail Corner: 3 ways to a glitter mani with the galaxy nail, broken disco ball, and our Britney Spears “Toxic”-inspired design

Comments

See how we painted our nails! »

This week in Nail Corner, we’re bringing you glitter in three ways: as an accent, in an artistic design, and in a whole new format. The holiday season is always a great excuse for wearing glitter polish non-stop, especially since almost all the brands include a few glitters in their holiday collections. It also takes the stress out of matching your attire to your manicure—glitter is, in a way, somewhat neutral. (We’re not the only ones who pick an outfit based on our polish, right?) And don’t let the difficulty of removing it get you down: we have a solution. As always, if you like what you see in Nail Corner, have questions, or want to share your own manicure, get in touch through Facebook or Twitter. Read more »

Afternoon beauty fix: How to do an easy and on-trend festive look

Comments

I love dressing up for the holidays, though I’m not very inventive with my makeup. What’s festive and on-trend, but also easy to do?
Not only is a nude face with a cherry-red lip suitable for this time of year, it’s Tom Ford approved—as seen in his recent ad campaigns—so we especially love it. Lipstick with a blue undertone, like the colour of cranberries or merlot, will help teeth look whiter. Pair bright lips with an even base and you have an easy-to-achieve, perfectly polished look. Begin by mixing an oil-free foundation with a drop of your day cream—smooth it on your skin using a sponge or foundation brush, being mindful to blend thoroughly and avoid excess. Follow with a creamy, yellow-tinted concealer, such as Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Fast Fix Concealer ($12, at drug stores) to neutralize dark circles and tiny imperfections—it’s tempting to apply concealer first, but it always works best when you put it over top of foundation. A matte red lipstick, like M.A.C Cosmetics “Russian Red,” ($18, maccosmetics.com), will last longer than its creamy cousin. Apply pigment to the centre of your lips, then use a brush to pull colour to the corners. Blot with a tissue and repeat! A swipe of sparkly gloss over top will make your lips look fuller and bestow them with the festive look you’re going for.

Afternoon beauty fix: Nail polish remover that removes even the blackest of blacks!

Comments

I have an extra hard time getting rid of darker nail polish shades. Is there a super-strong remover that can help?
Dark colours like red, grey, black, and navy not only take the longest to dry, they’re also the most difficult to get rid of. If your remover is pumped up with “moisturizing” oils and flowery fragrances, it’s likely to leave dark lines of pigment around your cuticles. Oils interfere with the effectiveness of acetone, which is what works to remove stubborn paint, and leave you scrubbing at the surface to no avail. The overall best option is to find a remover with 60 percent acetone or more. We like Sally Hansen Maximum Strength Regular Formula Polish Remover ($4, at select mass retailers). It smells stronger, but works best to prep nails for a better mani next time.

NYFW backstage beauty: Matte magenta mouths at Prabal Gurung

Comments

The matte magenta mouths at Prabal Gurung were gorgeous at first glance, but look a little closer, and they were blackened in the center. Since the designer was inspired by Japanese photographer Araki’s shots of exotic blooms (as well as aggressive-looking nudies, we just discovered while Googling him), he asked makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury to create the illusion of “this orchid that was sort of coming out of the lips.” To do that, she used M.A.C. Pro Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil to slightly overdraw the lips “like they’ve been kissing,” while MAC Pro Pigments in “Burgundy,” “Fuschia,” and “Black” provided the slightly ombre effect to mimic the flower. Cheekbones were contoured for “slight definition and structure” with cream bronzer. Next, silver grey shadow was stroked across the sockets of the eyes, and Strobe Cream was added on top for a gleam. To create highlights, Luna Cream Color Base was blended in a C shape around the temple and eyes and a lick of mascara and gelled up brows finished the look. On nails, Jin Soon Choi used Sally Hansen’s “Loves Me Not,” a dark purple with subtle glitter, as the main tone “to make a strong statement” edged by “Lacy Lilac” “to show a soft side.”
