U.S. retailer Target is looking to take their designer collaboration tagline to heart and Go International. (Sorry.) The company is planning to expand outside U.S. borders and is looking at Canadian locations as part of the strategy. Nothing’s confirmed yet, and if the new stores do actually happen, it won’t be for at least another three years. Just in time for the inevitable Snooki for Target line. Designer Amanda Wakeley and milliner Stephen Jones were honored by the Queen with an Order of the British Empire (OBE). Luella Bartley received an MBE. We’ll leave it up to you and Wikipedia to parse the difference between those two. [Grazia]

In yet more awarding news, Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation has named their 2010 winners, including red-carpet up-and-comer Prabal Gurung and new name on the tailoring block Joseph Altuzarra. The honour comes with a US$25,000 prize to go toward the designers’ Fall 2010 presentation. [WWD] Read the rest of this entry »

Browsing the Holt Renfrew holiday pop-up

dec09holtsFC4_lg

The Holts pop-up transformed the Fashion House condos location (560 King St. W., Toronto) into a holiday boutique filled with luxe, well-edited picks from Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Alexander Wang et al. Though the merch was heavy on winter (Sorel boots and house brand Cowichans, loads of flannel, and stocking stuffers like Dandi Maestre bracelets and Butter London nail polish), the atmosphere was stifling hot in the window-encased sunroom. (We’re hoping a much-needed fan will be in place by tomorrow.) Jurlique creams, sparkly Hanky Panky lingerie gift sets and colourful Theory sweaters were among the more feminine picks, though much of VP of fashion direction Barbara Atkin’s curated selection could be worn by men and women. (We especially liked the Christopher Sherman bow ties and classic Canada Goose parkas). The merch will be replenished daily until the shop closes on December 6–just follow the hot pink Holts truck.

The hours: Tonight till 7 p.m., Thursday 2 to 9 p.m., Friday 12 to 8 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 12 to 6 p.m. Click the images below to see a gallery of the shop.

Holts to pop up on King West

Holt Renfrew (holtrenfrew.com) will be opening its first ever pop-up shop next week. The Fashion House condo development 560 King Street West will be open from December 2 to 6. (The development is definitely making friends with Canadian fashion, allowing Jeremy Laing, Greta Constantine, Mikhael Kale and 8 other designers to put their stamp on the building’s common areas.) The Holts pop-up will have a unisex theme, with their VP of fashion direction, Barbara Atkin, curating a selection of clothing that aims to blur “the lines between male and female dressing.

Calgary: Christina Hendricks, Heather Marks and Elisha Cuthbert party at Holt Renfrew opening

While we were busy at the New Moon premiere in Toronto on Thursday night, Holt Renfrew was loading up on star power for the opening of their new Calgary flagship. Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks was there (with new hubby Geoffrey Arend) in a cool suit-like dress by Canadian David Szeto, while Calgary homegirl Heather Marks sported a mesh dress with patent appliqués by another Canuck designer, Rita Liefhebber. Jeremy Piven, Gossip Girl Kristen Bell and Glee’s Jessalyn Gilsig also made an appearance, as did 24’s Elisha Cuthbert with her Flames boyfriend, Dion Phaneuf.  Calgary band The Fast Romantics played a set (with some unplanned accompaniment from Piven, who insisted on drumming–to mixed reviews) before handing over the dance floor to DJ Samantha Ronson.

Check out the party pics after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Vancouver shop talk: Qortezan

sept09qortezan

Most fashionistas-in-the-know are familiar with Edie Hats, the legendary Granville Island hat shop for finding everything from a trendy fedora or Panama hat to a cloche or wide-brimmed number suitable for the Sunday races. Little did we know, however, that its owner, Edie Orenstein, has always also dreamed of opening a store inspired by the great courtesans of history, who earned respect by virtue of their wit and sensuality. Enter Qortezan (1035 Mainland St., Vancouver, 604-685-7755, qortezan.com), a new, elegant Yaletown space Read the rest of this entry »

CIFF executive director Jacqueline Dupuis on the red carpet at last year's Calgary International Film Festival.

This week marks the opening of the Calgary International Film Festival (calgaryfilm.com) and ten days of premiere-hopping and socializing with the stars.

Taking time out from her busy gig as executive director for CIFF, Jacqueline Dupuis shared with me a few of her style secrets that take her from day to night over ten days and approximately one hundred and eighty eight films.
