The Future of Fashion: Canadian Designer Sid Neigum Wins a 3D Printing Grant
When I think of Sid Neigum, the first word that comes to mind is “future,” so it’s not surprising that this Canadian star has just won a $50,000 3D printing grant.
The 3D printing process once seemed like a futuristic fantasy from a Sci-Fi storyline, but it’s now become a reality courtesy of the Be3Dimensional Innovation Fund and Think2Thing. With past collections focusing on silhouette and exaggerated sculptural shapes, Neigum couldn’t be a more fitting recipient to push the boundaries of shape and design.
The Canadian designer is the first to receive this grant in the fashion category and will have the opportunity to work with Think2Thing to create 3D printed designs. Since debuting his collection at Toronto Fashion Week in 2011, he has won a number of awards, opening up doors to opportunities, including showing his collection during London Fashion Week and designing costumes for the Vancouver Opera. Plus, he recently received his largest order to date from international luxury online retailer, Net-a-Porter.
While Neigum’s 3D designs are yet to take form, he has expressed interest in creating softer, more unexpected 3D printed pieces such as fluid looking, nylon chain mail. Constructed using a 3D printer, garments made in this material could be completely seamless. As Neigum starts his design process, we anxiously await his big reveal of the future of fashion.
