Our beauty director has a massage moment

I like my body massages simple. Don’t rub me down with hot rocks, wrap me in tinfoil or make some bird-boned 60lb person walk across my back. And I’m not keen on the soft touch and tickle approach either. Massages should be the tension relieving, sleep inducing deep-tissue treatments typically found at specialty clinics, not spas. Or at least that’s what I thought. Read the rest of this entry »

Healthwinds spa offers Euro-inspired pampering

sum09healthwinds

Walking into Toronto’s new Healthwinds spa (650 Mount Pleasant Rd., 416-488-9545, healthwindsspas.com) is refreshing—owner Kailee Kline says she was inspired by the classic northern European spa experience, and it shows. The design is simple and sleek; there’s lots of white with bamboo accents, a clean-lined juice bar and a lounge complete with slate-grey water wall and modern fireplace. Connecticut noise rockers Magik Markers, play Suoni Per Il Popolo on June 28

Despite the chilly weather, summer’s here and we’re getting ready to inaugurate the season in style! First, we’re booking a pass for Suoni Per Il Popolo (June 3 to 30, suoniperilpopolo.org), Montreal’s coolest avant-garde music festival. Soul-rock lovers will flock to TV on the Radio’s concert tomorrow, free-jazz aficionados are dying to get a ticket for Dave Burrell (June 6), and French pop freaks are heading to Pas Chic Chic (June 5). Getting fit-faced, en masse

apr09tenspot1_lg

Toronto’s The 10 Spot (749 Queen St. W., 416-915-1010, 10spot.ca) has carved out a nice little niche for itself. When it first opened in 2006, it was one of many new nail bars spreading like wildfire across the city. But it was instantly likeable for its totally cheeky and hilarious attitude, and in the way it branded itself as the anti-spa, positioned way more as a place to congregate with your chicks rather than unwind and tune out the world.

Now, owner Kristen Gale has removed the relaxation/isolation component from facials with the addition of a Facial Bar, Read the rest of this entry »

Face it, you need a facial

Photography by James Lourenço

I have a confession: The seemingly permanent real estate that the blackheads on my nose have claimed makes me fear they’ll never go away and I’ll have to start referring to them as freckles to avoid the shame of being a beauty director with clogged pores. Even with a finely applied layer of foundation I can’t hide them—a midday shine gives me away, uncovering my dirty little secret. So, in utter despair and, I’m not going to lie, 11 months of unwanted abstinence, I booked a facial ($95) with Jennifer Cueto, aesthetician for Concepts Salon & Spa (60 Bloor St. W., 416-922-1558, conceptstoronto.com).

The body wrap that you, the Oscar nominees and Neil Patrick Harris can use to look good.

mar09wrap1_lg

To look good, sometimes you have to look ridiculous.

Considering that I rarely ever make it to the gym these days (I blame my toddler), when the offer of a body treatment that guaranteed at least a six-inch loss over the course of two hours was presented, how could I say no?
