The daily grind of summer city life, staring longingly out the window from our overly air-conditioned cubicles, has us beat. We want to be young again, we want to roll up our sleeping bag, pack up our trunk and head north for a summer filled with early morning polar bear swims, roasting marshmallows, weaving friendship bracelets and crushing on cute counselors. Alas, we’re not 15 anymore, but with a cottage invite (or a backyard lean-to if you’re desperate), weekends can be all about bringing back those dog days spent by the dock, complete with bikinis, plaid button-downs and maybe, if you’re lucky, even a summer crush…or two.

Editor obsessed: Dermalogica’s Powerfoliant clears skin of essentially everything!

Photography by Amanda Elliott
It’s that time again, when the words “smog,” “heat wave” and “humidity” enter our vernacular, and our poor little pores suffocate under the blanket of sunscreen, street dust and the ever-present perspiration moustache. Don’t you just want to blast it all away at the end of the day? Dermalogica’s Powerfoliant ($85, dermalogica.ca) is satisfyingly merciless, and though it’s part of the Chroma White range (who really wants to whiten?) it’s just a serious exfoliator that combines vitamin C, salicylic acid and fruit acids, plus a bunch of other brightening ingredients. It’s also pleasingly science-y—the box contains two vials of exfoliator, and you have to pop down the cap to release the powder into the liquid, which—SHAZAM!—activates the lot of it until it self-destructs in four weeks. There’s also a dropper attachment so you don’t use too much of the precious (and I do mean precious) stuff. You’ll be rationing it obsessively for fear of running out; I certainly am.

Hurrah! My feet have been saved from the ravages of summer footwear
I bought a pair of sandals earlier this summer that I only appear able to wear with socks. While the look is de rigueur at the moment, one doesn’t always want to bust it out—at a wedding, say—just to avoid blisters from too-stiff leather or backs that rub. After a Sunday of limping in said sandals, I was happy to find a can of Flexitol’s Blistop ($10, at Zellers) on my desk this morning. I immediately whipped off my shoes (and coral socks) and gave the tops of my toes a few spritzes of the spray, which dries perfectly clear. (There is a slight sheen, but it’s not noticeable.)

Green beauty: Let’s get physical (sunblocks)
I’ve been a sunscreen zealot for many years now. It’s even caused familial strife—heated arguments with my mom and brother about the importance of wearing it are not uncommon. But at a Burt’s Bees event over a year ago, a gaggle of beauty editors were sent into a tizzy (myself included) when we were apprised of the issues surrounding chemical sunscreen ingredients (such as oxybenzone). Among the concerns: Some studies suggest they produce free radicals (eek!) and mimic estrogen. Chemical sunscreens have to be absorbed into your skin to work, which means those ingredients are going in as well. I didn’t need to know any more–I was done with them. Read more »
