On a cottage weekend, these are the shoes ($20, jutesapparel.com) you put on on Friday afternoon and don’t take off until Sunday night. Give your feet a rest with a shoe that combines the two styles that make feet happiest: slippers and sandals. Plus, they come in a confection of cute colours so you can guarantee they’ll match your cottage look.

I bought a pair of sandals earlier this summer that I only appear able to wear with socks. While the look is de rigueur at the moment, one doesn’t always want to bust it out—at a wedding, say—just to avoid blisters from too-stiff leather or backs that rub. After a Sunday of limping in said sandals, I was happy to find a can of Flexitol’s Blistop ($10, at Zellers) on my desk this morning. I immediately whipped off my shoes (and coral socks) and gave the tops of my toes a few spritzes of the spray, which dries perfectly clear. (There is a slight sheen, but it’s not noticeable.)

I’ve been a sunscreen zealot for many years now. It’s even caused familial strife—heated arguments with my mom and brother about the importance of wearing it are not uncommon. But at a Burt’s Bees event over a year ago, a gaggle of beauty editors were sent into a tizzy (myself included) when we were apprised of the issues surrounding chemical sunscreen ingredients (such as oxybenzone). Among the concerns: Some studies suggest they produce free radicals (eek!) and mimic estrogen. Chemical sunscreens have to be absorbed into your skin to work, which means those ingredients are going in as well. I didn’t need to know any more–I was done with them. Read more »

I’m a hardcore DIYer, so I usually have a tough time justifying the cost of manis, pedis et al. Shizen Spa at Toronto’s Cosmopolitan Hotel (8 Colborne St., 416-945-5455, and one other Toronto-area location, shizen.ca) has a line-up of lunch-time deals that threaten to goad even a cheapskate like me to shell out. Book an appointment on a weekday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and you can get an express mani/pedi and a spa lunch for $65 or a spray tan and lunch for $40. (See the promotions section of the site for full details.) My office mates voted the Get Ready for Summer package–bikini and eyebrow waxing and a spa lunch for $45–the best deal of the bunch.
