I love soaking up my city’s cultural scene-especially when it’s free! While searching for local library hours, I discovered that my library card gives me access to not only books and back issues, but museums, galleries and historic sites too. A Sun Life Financial Museum and Arts Pass (borrowed from branches across Toronto, torontopubliclibrary.ca) admits one family for one free visit to culture spots that include The Textile Museum of Canada, the AGO, The Bata Shoe Museum and the Gardiner Museum. I’ll happily forgo my Saturday morning sleep-in to pick up a pass!

Vintage mavens and do-it-yourself designers should head down to the Textile Museum of Canada (55 Centre Avenue, Toronto, 416-599-5321, textilemuseum.ca) tomorrow night for panel discussion on upcycling (i.e. making old stuff new). Preloved’s Julia Grieve (an expert in this area) will join vintage costume jewellery maven Carole Tanenbaum for the talk, titled Fashion Forum: Style Alchemy. National Post fashion writer Nathalie Atkinson moderates. Afterward, mingle among mannequins styled by some of the best vintage retailers in the city including 69 Vintage and The Cat’s Meow. As a bonus, Queen West’s Poutini’s will offer their gourmet greasy spoon favourite, which you can wash down with some trendy-again rosé. Tickets are $15 at the door. Talk starts at 6:30 p.m.

The Textile Museum of Canada (55 Centre Ave., Toronto, 416-599-5321) is a gem of a museum tucked away on a side street near University and Dundas and if you haven’t been there, you really should remedy that tout de suite. Not only is it a trove of fabrics from all over the world, there’s also a regularly rotating line-up of contemporary art exhibitions.

This Thursday, June 4, the museum is hosting the first of its new Texstyle event series, Androgyny ($45, textilemuseum.ca). (It’s an institution that’s near and dear to me—I’m on the organizing committee.) The night includes a discussion on androgyny in art and style between fashion scribe David Livingstone, author Derek McCormack and designer Mikhael Kale, followed by drinks, nibblies from Queen West’s Nyood and tunes spun by DJ Jordan Bimm.  Sephora will also be there doing androgyne glam and you can even squeeze in a museum tour—including the can’t miss fashion exhibit, The Cutting Edge.
