Yes, our foremost interest in TIFF is style (see some of our favourite moments), but we attended enough premieres and parties to have more than a few brushes with celebrity. Click the images below to see our roundup of our favourite celeb run-ins, parties, gossip, and the one thing that was on everyone’s lips: Golf carts.

Instead of a best-dressed list for this year’s TIFF, we’ve decided to round up our top fashion moments–everything from witnessing a red carpet transformation to meeting a veritable style legend (and, yeah, a few of our favourite looks.)

Take a peek inside Swarovski’s TIFF fashion suite

Comments

Every year at the film festival, Swarovski hosts a gifting and lending suite where talent can come in, take a look around and borrow some ice for the red carpet. This year, the items in the lounge from the fall collection had a distinct ice queen feel to them – think Anne Hathaway as the white queen in Alice in Wonderland, or better yet, Tilda Swinton as the White Witch in The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. The real TIFF style star? The resort collections spotted all over the red carpet

Comments

During this year’s TIFF, the word we read almost as often as “red carpet” or “Martin Sheen” was “Resort,” as in resort collections. Indeed, no designer dominated the premieres and parties, but these collections certainly did, popping up on nearly every major red carpet. Our favourite was Carey Mulligan‘s celestial Christopher Kane dress, but Emma Stone (in Stella McCartney), Rebecca Hall and Jennifer Connelly (both in YSL) also chose looks from this “season” (can we call it that?). Freida Pinto wins for most resort-filled TIFF wardrobe, trotting out Alexander McQueen for the You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger premiere, an aqua Narciso Rodriguez for the presser and a fuchsia leopard-print Marchesa for the Miral party. TIFF red carpet: Right this way for pictures of Ryan Gosling at the Blue Valentine premiere

Of the Ryans floating around at TIFF this year, the vastly superior one (in our humble opinion) is Ryan Gosling, who showed up last night for the Canadian premiere of Blue Valentine. Rumour was that he would skip it, so imagine the relief when he ambled, with his mom, across the red carpet and into the theatre, sweetly greeting the rows of mostly lady fans on his way to his seat. Star power aside, the film had an excitable audience paying full attention as the beautifully real and really flawed relationship between the couple played by Gosling and Michelle Williams—who was particularly affecting—played out across the screen. During the Q&A, Gosling had his aww-inspiring six-year-old co-star Faith Wladyka on his hip, and spurred the entire theatre to sing happy birthday to an audience member who requested a serenade.

Life’s not fair: A guide to TIFF swag lounges and the celebrities who love them

Comments

Catherine Deneuve poses with a charicature of herself at the Sharpie booth in the IT Lounge.

What most elementary school teachers don’t teach their kids is that the word “gift” can also be a verb. To gift, or gifting is a major part of TIFF, where if you’re an A-lister (or even a B-lister) you’ll get spoiled and pampered just for being you. Brands want celebrities to be seen with their products and are showering them with everything from jeans to jewellery to children’s books. Now that the festival is in its homestretch, we’re breaking down the who’s who of giving and getting. And yes we know, it’s just not fair.

TIFF red carpet: Jennifer Connelly wears a shorts tux to the premiere of What’s Wrong With Virginia

Just when we thought any semblance of glamour had gone out of TIFF, Jennifer Connelly swoops in in a sleek and cool YSL Resort 2011 tux. The actress attended the premiere of Dustin Lance Black‘s What’s Wrong With Virginia, where she plays the title role, and which also stars Ed Harris, Emma Roberts and cutie newcomer Harrison Gilbertson.

TIFF gallery: Rachel Weisz, James Franco et al trade interviews for gift bags at Holts’ Variety Studio

Comments

Rachel Weisz at Holt Renfrew's Variety Studio

While Holt Renfrew didn’t have their annual film festival bash this year, they did try something new with the Variety Studio. The in-store area, heavily blocked off from snooping shoppers, was a hub for talent to come in and get interviewed for Variety.com–and get a little something something to take home. The full complement of talent who stopped by would be tiresome to list, but some that made us a little giddy were Marion Cotillard, Rachel Weisz, James Franco and Julian Schnabel. Take a look at the photos below–they’re almost enough to make us not yearn just a little bit for last year’s party.
