SNP’s word of the day: Phantasmagorical

Comments

Word: Phantasmagorical

Meaning: A series of random, fantastical events occurring as in a dream; kind of like surrealism minus the realism.

Usage: “I wanted to be sure I was properly grounded before straying into treacherous territory: the nature of being in our phantasmagorical high-finance, high-tech era.” — a Salon.com review of the new Robert Harris book

You should know it because: Yesterday, the online fashion rag Hint posted about a new flavour of macaron by Tsumori Chisato for Ladurée, a flavour the Parisian makers call “phantasmagorical.” I hope one bite sends you on a lurid bacchanalia populated by satyrs and unicorns, a sort of Fear and Loathing in Ladurée, because that’s what a phantasmagoria is. Think of: paintings by the 15th century Dutch freak Hieronymus Bosch, music by David Lynch, and films by Tim Burton—or better yet, Guillermo del Toro‘s Pan’s Labyrinth (2008). Phantasmagorical literature is often for kids, á la Lewis Carroll, but not always: One Hundred Years of Solitude is a good example; Midnight’s Children, an overrated one. The more occult beliefs of Carl Jung were phantasmagorical, and so were the teachings of American author/shaman Carlos Castaneda. But a pink macaron? Keep dreaming.

TFW diary: A steep learning curve ahead for Choryin Choi

Cydelic by Choryin Fall 2011

Given the number of new designers on the schedule each season, it’s clear that we’re big supporters of emerging talent. Fresh off of Seneca’s Textile Design and Fashion Arts Awards, newbie Choryin Choi may already have a devoted fan base. Exhibit A: uproarious applause by the student-filled crowd. A kooky capsule collection of complicated pieces (I heard more than one whispered Tim Burton reference) included big-buttoned bubble hem coats, lace blazers, rippling ribboned bottoms and moth hole skirts that upon closer inspection revealed a collage of masked faces. “Out-there” designers are a great part of Toronto’s fashion fabric, but those wishing to enter the fray will also have to learn to distill their vision and build a following beyond their peers to attract buyers. There may be a steep learning curve ahead, but isn’t that what fashion week’s all about?

Swarovski’s Alice in glittering Wonderland

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland hits theatres today, but the tie-in machine is already in full force. Swarovski launched a Wonderland-themed jewellery collection last week that manages to combine kid-friendly designs with more grown-up pieces. The Red Queen gets a nod with bejewelled hearts and spades; the Mad Hatter with sparkling shears and spools of thread. There’s even a Cheshire Cat pendant. The limited-edition collection of pendants, rings, and bracelets hit all Swarovski stores last week, and will be available until they run out. Or Alice wakes up.

Daphne Guinness is the new face of Akris’ spring campaign. The off-the-wall fashionista will officially be tied to the new handbag collection launching in February. Designer Albert Kriemler explained his choice by saying that Daphne “emanates a sense of mystery and aristocracy.” We’re with you on the mystery part. [Fashionista]
