Vancouver: A Perse pop-up on South Granville

Now that the party’s over and Vancouver has returned to its calm, laid-back self (of course, there are still plenty of Paralympics festivities), I’m craving some serious R&R. Never a better time, then, to stop by the James Perse pop-up (2717 Granville St., 604-736-4766, jamesperse.com), which opened before the Olympics and is sticking around the South Granville strip indefinitely. The California–based label is known for its quality basics and so-comfortable-you’ll-never-want-to-change loungewear, which are available alongside bedding and books at the store—the company’s second location in Canada.

Daily Steal

Daily steal: Maple leaf soap, $8

The Vancouver Games may be over, but we still have plenty of reason to show our patriotic side. Enter the Canuck-inspired limited-edition maple soap by Lush ($8; lush.ca), which contains real Canadian maple syrup and a sugar topping that leaves your skin sweetly scented. Bonus: In true Lush style, no beavers were harmed in the making of this product!

Vancouver: Test driving the mani/pedis at Cambie Village’s Muse salon

I adore nail polish. Scratch that–I am hopelessly in love with it. I am a girl who has devotedly had polish on my fingers everyday since the eighth or ninth grade. Because of this, I consider going for a professional manicure or pedicure to be an occasional luxury. However, when I heard about Muse salon (3020 Cambie St., Vancouver, 604-876-5580, musesalon.ca) that opened at the end of January, with manicures from $20 and pedicures from $30, I couldn’t help myself. Vancouver: Some (subtly) patriotic souveniers to bring home from Olympics

I’ve been picking up patriotic souvenirs all over the place, but I’ve started thinking that it might be a better strategy going forward (now that the Games are almost over…I’m shedding a tear here) to focus on items that I’ll still want to wear after March (and yes, before the 2012 Olympics in London). Here, the first of my Canadian-but-not-too-Canadian souvenirs that I’m betting will survive longer than my red mittens: Read the rest of this entry »

Vancouver: A very furry take on the hockey jersey

Rebecca Tay models the Fursey (fur + jersey!)

No sane Canadian would deny that hockey is our game and I’ve gotta say that The Fursey (thefursey.com) is probably the most appropriate (albeit non-official) piece of merchandise I’ve seen so far. They’re produced by an American company who can take any jersey (even a Canadian red and white one, of course) and add a furry lining to make a Nanook of the North-meets-Olympic pride statement. Prices vary, and they’re only available in Vancouver until the games close on Sunday. I can’t think of a better way to cheer on the boys when they (fingers crossed) make it to the gold medal game.

The Culture Club: Top 6 places in Vancouver to get a cold beer during the Olympics

The bar at Market by Jean-Georges in Vancouver

Ashleigh Dempster and Amanda Blakley call themselves cultural curators. Their club, The Society (thesocietyglobal.com), hosts high- and low-arty happenings in Toronto, L.A. and New York (and on March 25, Miami!)—from literary salons to graffiti tours and the always hotly-anticipated S.M.U.T. Soiree—so we can think of no better pair to write our new feature, The Culture Club. Every Thursday, they’ll be bringing you a weekly list of six culture picks for Toronto (and beyond)—everything from the best airplane reads to late-night eats to the top gallerists.

First up (and early this week): The top 6 places to get a cold beer in Vancouver during the Olympics.

The Shore Club (688 Dunsmuir St., 604-899-4400). We love the dark woods, California blinds and subdued interior. It’s also a stone’s throw from Holt Renfrew. Sit at the bar and order a Rickard’s White– refreshing after shopping til you drop in the Pacific Centre. Read the rest of this entry »

Vancouver: Need an Olympics break? How about a bit of da Vinci?

feb10vanart_lg

With Robson Street completely pedestrianized between Bute and Beatty streets and Georgia Street now home to one of the city’s largest public squares, it’s inevitable that visitors will come across the Vancouver Art Gallery (vanartgallery.bc.ca). I love artist Michael Lin’s enormous mural of colourful Taiwanese fabric covering the entire Georgia Street façade, but with all the world’s attention on athletes and their bodies, two exhibitions inside are also worth a visit. Visceral Bodies is a collection of multi-media art inspired by advances in science and medicine, while Leonardo da Vinci: The Mechanics of Man features 16th century drawings of the genius’ discoveries about the human body, hundreds of years before they were confirmed by, well, scientists. I took my two interns to their first press conference ever, where we got a preview and tour of the latter by its British curator, Martin Clayton of the Royal Collection. Our conclusion? If you’re in need of a mid-Olympics break (or perhaps just some well-deserved quiet time), we suggest checking out these exhibitions.

Vancouver: Jennifer Heil shows off her new silver jewellery (and medal!)

Jennifer Heil might be all Olympic muscle, but even she finds the silver medal she won in moguls heavy.

“It’s an actual pain in the neck,” she admitted, cradling the gleaming silver chunk in her hands. Still Heil was beaming during brunch at Birks Vancouver store on day 7 of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games. She let reporters hold the medal (it IS heavy!) and unveiled two new designs for Birks (birks.com). Read the rest of this entry »

Jamie Salé, natural beauty

feb10jamesale_lg

Eight years ago, Jamie Salé and David Pelletier took Olympic gold for their long program in pairs figure skating—and here’s betting no one’s forgotten the scandal surrounding their medal. Now, though, they’re in Vancouver for the 2010 Games, and in between commentating on her sport for CTV, Salé sat down with me to discuss her new role as spokesperson for famed au naturel line, Burt’s Bees (burtsbees.ca). Olympic-style celebrations at the Opus hotel

After meeting all their fans on Saturday at Holt Renfrew (holtrenfrew.com), Dean and Dan Caten headed to Opus hotel (opushotel.com), where the Dsquared designers hosted a cocktail party with M.A.C Cosmetics, whose makeup artists were responsible for all the brilliant looks on stage at the opening ceremony. Here, some of the lovely faces at the evening’s event.
