Dispatches from Paris: Brocade at Balmain, colour blocking at Balenciaga and sequinned booties at Barbara Bui
Parisians sure take their fashion trends seriously. Everyone here–from babies to grannies–is wearing Breton stripes, even though it’s still parka weather. The catwalks, meanwhile, are taking a walk on the wilder side for fall 2010. As of day three, the rich rocker chic dominates as the new icon of Parisian style. There were velvet brocade frock coats (think Mick Jagger) and mini-dresses embellished with gold chains at Balmain, croc leggings and booties embroidered over and over again with metallic sequins and fringe at Barbara Bui (see the video above). An emerging trend: colour blocking and patchwork, both dark and moody, or sweetly sci-fi as at Balenciaga.

London: Mary Katrantzou’s trompe-l’oeil collage
The shapes were simple enough at Mary Katrantzou’s London Fashion Week show–long- and cap-sleeved shift dresses, a high-collar vest, a pencil skirt. There was maybe a ruffle or an asymmetric neck, but otherwise all the detail came as a clash of jewels, bows, lace and folds–all prints. It was a clever mix of the new minimalism with the over-the-top ornament of recent seasons. In the closing looks, the show’s flat decoration exploded as ruffles–the 3-D kind–cascading from hips and shoulders.

London: Mark Fast layers up for fall
Mark Fast showed his fall collection in London on Saturday. The live feed, didn’t work out, unfortunately, but we have the video now. Fast again populated his show with a few normal-sized models–including Crystal Renn–and showed a parade of his signature short, tight open work knits. Read the rest of this entry »

London: Christopher Kane puts a dark spin on floral embroidery
Christopher Kane presented his collection earlier today at London Fashion Week and there’s already video! Kane spun the stodgy idea of floral embroidery onto closely black leather, PVC and lace shifts and skirts.
