If Black Friday deals didn’t give you your shopping fill today, never fear—this weekend marks the beginning of craft-show season across Canada, the best time to pick up unique and local gifts all in one place. We’ve also sourced the perfect romantic afternoon in Vancouver, an end-of-days party in Edmonton and a valid excuse to wear cat ears in Toronto.
From the ladies that brought us this genius encapsulation of everything great about Clueless, we present The Beach Ball! This quirky new splicing video not only features some of our favourite pop culture moments (namely the Saved by the Bell Malibu Sands Beach Club episode), but gives a bit of a teaser of what the team at Worn Fashion Journal is planning for their latest issue launch party, which is taking place tomorrow night. Word on the street is that they’ve got pina coladas, a postcard-themed photo booth and will be playing limbo all night long!
Worn Fashion Journal’s Beach Ball will take place Saturday, May 12 at 9 p.m. at Toronto’s Dovercourt House (that’s 805 Dovercourt Rd.). Tickets will cost $12 at the door and include a free copy of Worn’s latest issue. It’s time to break out the sandals, kids!
The lowdown: With fans like Susie Bubble and WORN Journal‘s Serah-Marie McMahon, the Montreal designer Angie Johnson has fashion’s intelligentsia on lock. The success of her Etsy shop, Norwegian Wood, has garnered sweet deals with Topshop Edit and—soon to hit stores—Anthropologie. But I’d rather get it direct from the source, if only for the personalized notes she slips in each brown-paper package.
For those of you who often mistake your dreams/fantasies for reality (not unlike Gael García Bernal in The Science of Sleep, if you know what we mean), what you’re about to watch might confuse you even more. It also might be the best 60 seconds of your life. The crafty ladies over at Worn Fashion Journal have created the ultimate video mash-up, entitled “Every Outfit Cher Horowitz Wears in Clueless in Under 60 Seconds.” And that says it all, doesn’t it? Prepare for a preview of heaven. Seriously. This is what we hope happens when we die.
Magazine: Rostam Location: Toronto M.O: Named after a Persian mythological figure representing masculinity and strength, Rostam was originally intended to be an online arts and culture magazine for men. That is until the first web issue went viral and editor Sahar Nooraei began thinking about the potential of print. Fast-forward to 2010, when Nooraei discovered two graphic designers who meshed with her vision, Martina Hwang and Bartosz Gawdzik, and the shift from web to print was set. Readers will notice the current issue contains editorials shot mostly by young female photographers; Nooraei wants to offer a new and rare perspective on menswear. Areas as diverse as fashion, music, fine arts, cinema and architecture are covered, with a focus on international and Canadian talents. The current issue features New York label Duckie Brown, Swedish architect Johannes Norlander and Canadian videographer Kevin Calero. Availability: info@rostamonline.net
