Archive: Star Gazing

Just in time for the Toronto International Film Festival, our fashion editor, Tammy Eckenswiller, considers the perks and perils of dressing celebrities for FASHION’s cover shoots.

Most stars scoff at anything less than ultra-labels and get fussy when you don’t have at least two full racks of clothes—even if you have only six outfits you actually want them to wear based on key seasonal trends and what will “sell” a cover.
Of course, the star often picks pieces that you aren’t looking to shoot her in. It’s a crazy diplomatic dance: While I’m trying to create an eye-catching cover, the star is saying, “I want to wear black.” I try to finesse things with remarks like “Wow! That makes you look so slender.”
Some moments that stand out include how Carrie-Anne Moss made me listen to Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” on repeat—for four hours—and how Katie Holmes talked about Tom Cruise like a giddy school girl, which was cute. Nelly Furtado was always Zen, sipping chamomile tea and reassuring me that everything was going to work out when the zipper on her dress broke.
With Lindsay Lohan, I noticed that she had haute designer radar and could sniff out pieces faster than you can say “Chanel.” Though it was strange to watch her being shot while listening to her own songs about her famously strained relationship with her father and getting very emotional, she was sweet to me, stopping the shoot to send her assistant for allergy medicine when I had a nasty reaction to the cats in the L.A. mansion we shot her in.
We all hear so much about “diva” celebs—their entourages, decadence, tantrums—but not about their crazy work and travel schedules: days that start at 5 a.m., straight off a flight, crammed full of radio and TV interviews, rehearsals, fittings and meetings, with zero “me” time, all while under intense pressure to perform perfectly and look flawless. Hilary Duff is a good example. I’ve worked with her three times—while she was squeezing photo shoots into her gruelling touring and promotional schedules—and she’s as sweet as pie. For this cover shoot, she came straight to set from Milan on two hours’ sleep with a raging flu. But she turned it on—and she did it with a smile!
One of my favourite shoots was with Heidi Klum. Confident and daring, she is one of the most charming, intelligent people I’ve ever met. I was dressing her in masculine suits, and she had on fishnets, heels and a Yves Saint Laurent vest, ready to pull on her trousers, when I said, “You look hot like that.” So she said, “OK, let’s shoot it like this,” and walked onto set in her knickers and fishnets.
And it made the shoot!
