Valentine’s Day—in principle, a lovely idea—has the unfortunate side effect of selling love and sex back to us in an overly saccharine, heart-shaped box. Don’t get me wrong; there’s little that fascinates us more at the FASHION offices than romance and relationships, except perhaps conversations and analysis about romance and relationships. Valentine’s Day, on the other hand, can end up making single women feel like pariahs and even the most doted-on woman suspect her romantic life isn’t up to snuff.

So in honour of this dubious holiday, we’re taking a different tack. Sure, you’ll find lots of sexy and desirable style in this issue. International designers have been up to their old tricks of blurring the lines between lingerie and meant-to-be-seen fashion. In “Pyjama Game”, Canadian supermodel Julia Dunstall slips into something more comfortable in the way that suits this trend best: lounging. Plus, check out our Shops section for sweet and sexy knickers, as well as a listing of the best lingerie shopping across the country.

You’ll find some unexpected takes on romance, too. Even the most alluring woman can occasionally find herself single. Should she spend the time between relationships waiting for Mr. Right to come along? Viia Beaumanis answers with a resounding no in “Lone Stars”, her ode to the advantages (self-esteem! glowing skin!) of lovers—not one-night stands but lovers, where there’s affection, friendship and sex but no commitment. And before you decide she thinks like a man, read “The Fall Guy”, Ben Kaplan’s story on what made him close the book on single life and fall in let’s-get-married love with his wife.

The other romance we’re having right now is with Canadian designers. There’s a new level of buzz surrounding our talent, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to get behind them. Whether it’s being shown in New York (Jeremy Laing), at the tents outside Toronto’s City Hall (Joeffer Caoc) or at Toronto Fashion Incubator’s Press & Buyers Breakfast (Malak by Kalam Lee), Canadian fashion is hot. Check out “The Home Front” for a small sampling of some of the season’s best.

And you know I love to get your letters—I’m anticipating some great ones to come out of this issue. Let me know what you love at letters@fashionmagazine.com.
