Wish List

We recently asked a group of Canadian tastemakers to tell us what they were craving for spring. Since a fashion magazine was doing the asking, it’s not surprising that most of the answers were wardrobe-related. There’s something so satisfying about knowing what other people want, isn’t there? I guess it’s the same impulse that makes me ask what everyone else at the table is ordering in a restaurant before I make my decision. It’s one part indecision and one part nosiness. In our survey, Spring’s Tastemakers, you can see what this stylish set is coveting.

What was interesting to me was that a few of them threw in a desire for art and design items along with Lanvin and Prada. I did the same thing without knowing anyone else had (so maybe I’m not so indecisive). There exists a notion that some high-end shopping environments can be intimidating. How many movies have exploited our fears of the haughty shopgirl? (Pretty Woman, anyone?) But even more prevalent is the idea that you have to be a wealthy art history grad to walk into a gallery and buy a piece of art.
In honour of our shopping issue, we set out to find the exceptions to this clichéd rule. There are so many galleries across Canada dealing with up-and-coming artists—at surprisingly reasonable prices—we couldn’t mention them all. So, we’ve taken a cross-country look at some of our favourites. Check out “The Art of Buying” (page 138) to find galleries where art-buying novices are more than welcome. These are places where you just may come across art’s next stars.

And if you want to know what we’re all after for spring, flip directly to our Shops section (page 175). Juicier than ever, Shops is full of the prettiest spring trends, how to make them work for you and where to score them across Canada. Write to me at letters@fashionmagazine.com, and tell me what you’re buying this spring. I love to get your letters.
