Disco divas and groovy dudes, get on your dancing shoes and party like it’s 1978 – all for a good cause. This Saturday, April 26, in Toronto’s Distillery District, Windfall Clothing Service is throwing their 5th annual Buy Design benefit ($75, buydesignforwindfall.ca), which will be hosted by Fashion File’s Adrian Mainella.
This year’s event has a Me Decade twist inspired by the likes of Andy Warhol and Studio 54: Look for The Factory, a live and silent auction that includes items from Tiffany & Co., Escada and local designers, such as Mary-Theresa Lawlor. The highlight is an art installation featuring seven Canadian designers, some who made their mark in the ’70s (Think: Linda Lundström, Pat McDonagh and Wayne Clark), and two up-and-comers: Greta Constantine and Project Runway Canada’s Carlie Wong.
With a ‘Man in the Skyy’ signature cocktail (an original concoction created by Toronto mixologist Brock Shepherd of Rice Bar and inspired by Studio 54’s “Man in the Moon with a Spoon”) in hand from the open bar and some updated mac’ and cheese and deviled eggs to munch on, guests can visit the Schwarzkopf’s Solo Bace hair station to touch up their ’do for a $2 donation. In original Halston or not, guests will be shaking their groove thangs in a disco inferno with DJ Andrew Karis.
“It’s an exciting event, I think it’s very different from what normally goes on in Toronto,” says Buy Design’s event manager, Alessia Pugliese. “We have an amazing group of volunteers. They’ve done so much legwork and creative thinking for the event so we can raise as much as possible for Windfall.”
Windfall is the only new-clothing bank in Canada and reaches 65,000 people in the Toronto through social service agencies. They’ve recently started accepting household and personal care items as well. According to Pugliese, Buy Design accounts for a quarter of Windfall’s budget, and with no government funding, every bit helps. “The amount we raise keeps getting larger every year,” adds Pugliese. “And the event keeps getting better.”
